Default Adapting 89 Engine Harness to 87/86 Car

I have just about re-finished re-shelling my car, in preperation for Hallett in a couple of weeks.

The shell is an 87, the engine harness is an 89.

I am trying to get the Tach and boost gage to work and its driving me nuts.

The schematic from an 86 car seems to match my car harness its a 4 pin rectangular plug. with pins 1-4 as Red/white, Black/green, Black/grey, white.

The 89 harness is an 8 pin. 1-4 as follows

White/green, Green/black, Yellow/green, Brown.

I have an 87 schematic but not an 89. If I compare the 86 and 87 wiring diagrams, both show pins 1 and 2 are supposed to be the tach and 3 4 the boost gage.

So the pin configuration appears to be the same and I should be able to get it to work, but nothing I try works.

If I connect just the pins 1 and 2 the car will not run, doesn't matter which way around I have them. Likewise I can't get anything out of the boost gage.

I don't care about the boost gage as I have an aftermarket, but its going to be tough to race without a Tach.

Any help greatly appreciated.

1. DME #11 - HSA
2. DME #21 - RPM to Tach
3. KLR #5 - Boost signal to Gage
4. C50 (MP) - Boost gage grounding
5. -- -
6. -- -
7. Diagnostic - TCS/TC
8. Oil level warning switch - Oil level warning light

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pete,

That matches my understanding but its just not working. I am wondering if the 4 pin plug I found is not the DME plug? The 4 pin plug matches the 86 wiring diagram, even though its an 87 car. I guess I'll have to trace the wires to the instrument cluster and confirm I am on the right plug.

86 instrument plug
1 WS/GN DME11 White/Green
2 GN/SW DME21 Green/black
3 RT/WS KLR5 Red/White
4 RT/GN Ground? Red/Green

87 instrument plug
1 WS/GN DME11 White/Green
2 GN/SW DME21 Green/black
3 BL KLR5 Blue
4 RT/GN Ground? Red/Green

If your car is an 87, someone cut up the harness to try to connect to an 86 engine harness?
If you have pins 1-4 as Red/white, Black/green, Black/grey, brown, the wires just aren't right....

There's a 4 pin plug to the ABS in the passenger's footwell:
1 RT/WS Red/white
2 SW/GN Black/Green
3 SW/GR Black/Grey
4 WS White

Yeah, I read that too. It terminates in the same general area as the tach lead.

So the mystery continues - Thanks for being honest

No problem. HSA is only mentioned in US wiring diagram, not in ROW's. It also leads to area where that consumption indicator is located, and, here it is...:
In WSM Vol 6 -turbo at page 28-14 the DME pin #11 it comes from is "4-pole separation point terminal 1 ( consumption indicator )" !!
