Default OIL LEAK>>>NEED GUIDANCE

So this evening I recorded some horrible videos... and found an oil leak..

My crossover pipe and metal skid plate are dripping... and I hate the smell of burning oil..

So my question is...can it be anything other than a rear main seal? Please?

I plan on investigating tomorrow... but wanted alternative places to look...

It could be a lot of things. Are you positive its engine oil?

John:

There is a good chance (. . . actually very good) that it is your cam tower leaking. Is the burnt oil mainly on the passenger side?

The two most common places are the rear cap of the cam tower - hard to see. That is a simple fix, a cork gasket replacement - (3) 6 mm bolts and it comes off.

The other is the cam tower to head seal itself. It will tend to pool oil above the headers and drain down to the cross over. These can be tricky, some have had better success with Lindsey's special cam tower seal.

Check it out and get back to us.

Now that is what I was looking for more than the radio..f'r..sorry..

I'll pull it apart tomorrow, fingers crossed for a cam tower or even a balance shaft housing... anything but a rear main... I'm inclined to think it is anything else because it hasn't been gradual.. just all of the sudden GUSH..

I'll definately post up what I find... even if it is a rear main.. and if it is I will do the clutch "while I'm in there..."

If the RMS leaks, will it even make it to the crossover pipe? My crossover pipe was always wet on the passenger side and would smoke/stink like crazy if the car sat for more than a couple of hours. That particular leak (I had many) was coming from the oil pan gasket.

Also ..and this would be my first check. would be the lower balance shaft o ring.

If they go away it makes a quik and big mess of the crossover

if it is the camtower-head gasket that needs replacing, i worked on a 944 once that had the normal gasket along with the grey gasket maker stuff all around the edges...not sure if thats good or bad but i never saw a drip of oil coming out of that thing

Yea, I have too. If you want to clog your oil passages then by all means.....

no not there, they installed the cam tower with the plain gasket and then put a bead of the gasket stuff around the outside edge lol
