I've got a Subaru WRX as a daily driver, so I've thought about subaru engine swaps a few times. Small turbo engines, and you can get em in 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 liters. The 3.0 liter is in the tribeca, it might be cool the get a used 3.0 liter soup it up and drop it in. I have no idea how hard it would be to mate it up the transmission though, or even about fitment. By just looking at em though, I'd say the engines are pretty close to the same size.

I'd like to see one of these in a 944, especially with a turbo or 2...

And I've heard that an Audi 5cyl turbo can be shoehorned into a 924 turbo tub without too much pain

I definitely believe that the hartley V8 can put down 400 hp and do 10k rpm...don't forget, hp = rpm*tq/5252, so you can increase hp by increasing tq or rpm
Also, they designed it as basically 2 Hayabusa engines (stock redline is >13k i believe) mated together with a dry sump. A stock hayabusa is ~200hp I believe, those things are obscenely powerful and light
