Default one of my crazier ideas ..HOLSET :)

I got to thinking after responding to Petenz about his turbo that I may be able to modify theh holset center section to adapt into the garrett turbine housing. I really wanted to use a Holset b/c they are SOOO much stronger internally than a Garrett. I was just going to go ahead and redo the uppipe and downpipe but this worked out much better . It spools very nice and WOW the power this thing makes on the top end is unbelievable. I am going to do a few other things along with changing the clutch this weekend. I really can't wait.

Edit: I just got done taking it out for a spin and it appears that I will need to do some more modification to the manifold. It was leaking from not being seated b/c the compressor housing is so damn big even witha serious boost leak it easily hit 30 PSI at 6800 rpm. F'n clutch will be replaced tomorrow . I really can't wait. Not sure if anyone here knows about Holsets but they are designed to run at well over 40 psi efficiently.

Well here it is, this turbo is comparable to a gt40, but uses a much smaller turbine wheel.

very nice looks like that turbo leaves a generous amount of room....lol

HayZus Sid, that looks like you're going to pre heat things just a little no? Had you experienced any issues with the Garrett so far? I kinda thought you wouldn't be able to hold off having a play with that thing. So when you're just going to the mall on a lazy 25psi, where will that badboy get to 1 bar? In your case 2bar is the new 1bar lol

Sid,
I have some experience with Holsets... That looks like an HX35? My friend ran an HX35 on his Eclipse GSX, and then upgraded to a 6-blade HX40 compressor side. Awesome turbos - really boost friendly. DSM guys have been using them for some time now. Make sure you don't use too small of a oil restricter... we had the thrust bearing go out on the HX35 due to not enough oil flow due to too tight of a restrictor (.075"). IIRC we wound up using a .095-.1 sized restrictor (with no problems running ~25psi daily boost for the last year).
What turbine housing are you using? The normal T3 footprint? If so, what size 16cm^2? Does it bolt up to the pedestal without issue?

Wow, that is huge. Back in my conquest days I rode in one with an HX40 and jesus christ it was like being shot out of a cannon

Olli,
That is awesome! Looks like a 7-blade HX40? Any numbers yet? What turbine housing was used? How is spool up?

Patrick,
so far even with the boost leak I am seeing 15psi at ~3800-4k I see full boost shortly after. The real difference is the amount that it holds boost way to redline. I have not hit the rev limiter this much in awhile. Especially at this much boost.

Joshua,
I am not using a restrictor at all. The fitting is ~.125 so I guess that is the restriction point so far I have seen not a trace of smoke from the exhaust . It is actually a H1e which is very similiar to the hx 40 except the wheels are a bit older. I have an hx35 sitting here too but I thought I'd try the bigger one first. I am currently looking for an HX40. If you read above, the craziness part Is that I actually adapted it to my garrett t4 .58 turbine housing. I was going to change over to t3 but I thought what the heck I'll see if I can do this and it was very easy. I like it as well.

I just figured that since I am very hard on turbos that I may as well get right to a beefier unit.

Patrick
also the real beauty is that these turbos have a very wide efficiency map so I don't think it is going to pre heat nearly as much as the t 57 I was running I believe it is due to the compressor housing being so deep .

Joshua,

I did have to grind just a little more off the pedestal, not too much more than the garrett.

It doesn't leave too much room but compared to a large garrett, it is more forgiving in that area.

OHH and UUUHH I just cannnot even begin to compare to Pete's that is really nice

Sid,
That is awesome! I can't wait to see how it performs when you fix the intake manifold leak
