Default 3 liters of tranny-blowing power

I turned the boost up to 18psi today. Felt great for a few minutes, but then promptly blew up my tranny. I was in second gear under full power and the tranny went SCREEECHHHH!!! and 2nd gear was history. Other gears still worked to get me home, but I could hear metal bouncing around in the case, and trying to put it in second is like trying to stick a screwdriver in a metal fan.

The only silver lining is that I have an LSD tranny waiting to be installed. Guess I better start reading up on the R&R procedure.

Tom, 1st, 2nd are just to get the car rolling. Your engine must be making serious torque!
Were you running 18psi on 91oct? How does the car "feel", like a big block V8?

I'll have to bring my 3.xL turbo back to the front burner

I was running 100 octane -- just filled up too darn it. I would not say it feels like a big block, but you can feel the difference in the torque band. The 2.5 was mightly quick with 355rwhp, but it felt more like it a sling shot -- being pulled forward sort of. The 3L has less of that sling shot feel -- feels more like you are being shoved from behind. I assume that's just extra torque at all levels. Feels great. Can't wait to get the LSD in now...

Congratulations, your broken tranny is a measure of your engine build! In contrast, my engine could only break itself! More seriously, sorry for the setback, but can't wait to hear your impression once you can get the power to the ground.

Congratulations on that build again. I hope the LSD is a turbo S with hardened 1st & 2nd gears. You may need them.

Dang, I've been thinking about turning up my boost to 18psi for a little while as I found a local shop thats selling 100. I'm paranoid that I'm going to blow a HG and now I have to worry about my tranny, thanks for spoiling the fun! only kidding. +1 for the Turbo S idea

Well, truth be told, this tranny was making too much noise before it popped -- the 2nd gear syncro was crunchy, and it would make plenty of noise when crusing at low speeds in 2nd gear too. As much as I'd like to say the motor killed the tranny, it was really on its way out long ago. That's why I have the LSD unit ready to go. I just wish I had the luxury of choosing when to install it.

I'd rather blow a tranny than an engine. Much easier to change out PLUS ya got a LSD waitin to go in.. Fate wanted you to install the LSD.

Last person to remove tranny was a dealership in LA just before I bought the car...
