Looks like I snapped an axle this morning or blew-up a CV joint. It's been cold here (for CA) and I have the new Vitesse turbo running well, so the car is making good power. Apparently more power than the axles/cv wanted to take. It was running great yesterday, but this morning something just snapped as I was pulling out of the driveway in reverse. Waiting for help to push the car back into the garage, but I reached up under there and can rattle the driver side axle so much it feels like it will almost pull out of the boot on the inboard/tranny side. Other axle feels tight. I guess the limited slip doesn't kick in when trying to limp into the garage, as I get zero power to the wheels -- just clunking. Hopefully the tranny is fine and it's just that axle or CV joint.

I had a spare set of axles but they were taking space so I gave them away to someone a while back

Guess I'll have to investigate stronger axles... suggestions from the high-HP club?

Go with a 6 speed transmission with heavy duty axles.

Are you running a "kelly mount" or a trans brace?

I'm just using all the stock parts to mount the tranny -- reasonably new, but bone stock. Never really looked into that -- guess I should...

Stock single tranny mount allows the trans to swing at load adding lot of stress to the axles.

I run early double mounts and no problems with snapped axles, even with hard launches with anti-lag and 500hp.

IMO it is a must. I have never broke an axle yet. Hundreds of low gear pulls at high boost. Here is what I did, low cost and it works:

Too bad they forgot the shift rod dust cover when they installed the transaxle. I would definitely put in an AOR transaxle. Another nice upgrade would be a beefier gear drive differential not a clutch disc style single disc like the stock unit has. But that cost a lot of $.

Every ZF LSD can be upgraded to have more discs. There are newer sintered discs available that are thinner and with twin disc LSD you can add 3 discs without machining the housing. I did that on mine when I installed LSD into the S2 gearbox (for my 924 2.5 16v turbo). Works like a charm.

Tom, we missed you today. Ed said it was clutch hydraulics. Hey, it is a 951! Could be all of the above!

Yeah, at least it happened right at the house. It's not the hydraulics. It's a shattered cv cage it would appear. I'll pull it out tomorrow and report back....

Yes, this is an old thread. Car has a Kevin gross built lsd tranny with hardened 1st and 2nd now. Today's issue appears to be the cv or axle on the driver side.

You did the urethane pour in the mount? Have you had any occasion to see it and find out how well it's holding up?
