Default gap in seal - rear hatch

quick Q:

my rear hatch seal has a gap in it of about 1"

this is just above the lock mechanism

when viewed from the inside looking out, i can see the outside

i'm wondering, has the rear hatch seal 'dried up' creating the gap or is there something missing? (maybe a spacer or grommet?)
looks like this:

|---gap
hatch |
-------------| |--------------
body O <--- lock

NOTE: it appears as if someone may have tried to break into the car as the hatch lock mechism is now hosed up (pressed in and won't spring back out)

thx

oh man, my little ascii graphic got messed up when posting....
the lock should appear exactly below the gap in the seal

it's an 88 turbo...not that it should matter

Good question, my '86 turbo also has about a 1" gap in the seal.

My 68 did as well, I managed to close it up. But when I ordered a new seal from Porsche it came as one piece i.e. one big loop no cut ends.

the hatch pins are height adjustable - careful to make sure you loosen jam nut and if stubborn - gingerly work back and forth with penetrating oil to get them moving.

If you break off the pins you will officially have a bad day

good luck

What lock mechanism are you talking about? The lock you stick your key into? If so that doesn't move at all.

not lock mechanism - the actual hatch pins (located on the hatch itself, go down inside the latches in the body of the car) They are threaded into the hatch thereby making them adjustable

Bridges, I know what you were talking about, but I was referencing the question in the original post:

The gap in the seal happens over time.... pull the old seal of and reapply it or you can do what I did and cut a little piece of an old seal and slide it in....but you would need a parts car for that....

My car is the same way. The seal in front of the little U hook that holds the rear hatch down is missing. I figured it just got ripped off and I would fix it when I get a new seal.

ok, so a new seal is in order

somethin's funky w/ the rear lock mechanism (not working)

i'll be climbing into the back, pullin the carpet and taking it apart...can't get the hatch to open at the moment (so i'll try manually pulling the 2 rods together at the center)

thx 4 the help all

Your car probably has a microswitch that opeates the rear lock (when using the key). My microswitch had failed and when I installed a new one, worked like a charm.
