Mitsu GSX, fairly light, easy to mod, a good one can be found for < $5K, EVO powertrain.

Mike, settle down champ. You forgot your meds. I can't believe how little you guys get BM stuff for (cars and mods), you guys pay nothing for Porsches and they're exe compared to BM's??
Is anyone modifying the Pontiac GTO over there? It's actually an Aussie GM car that somehow we sold back to you guys. Pretty nice looking in Australia before it got modified for the American market (Why can't they leave well enough alone?) and is available with the Vette 427 motor.
There's also plenty of hot Subi's and Evo's down here, but they look like they won't last 5 years let alone 20.

Any pics of the aussie version of the GTO....

EVo and Subbies can be made into pretty fast track cars. At the pointed end , i have yet to see one run times set by the fast 951 crowd..

Yes Patrick, people are modding GTO's both with the LS1 and the LS2, easy to get great power out of, but still a bit high in the price range for the "best do it yourself street/track car".

I know what my preference for this topic would be, but I dont feel like getting into a debate about it. It occasionally flashes by in one of the pics in my sig.

I'll see if I can't find a pic of a local one. It's really not that different, just less busy and smoother looking if that makes any sense.
Yeah the kids all hot up their Evos and Subs, but upon any inspection they look so cheap, especially inside but quick out of the box. I agree that we also don't see many of them that are very convincing on the track.
I also don't mind a nicely done R32 v6 awd DSG and some of the Audi's can be made to get up and dance too.

Damn Mike, did I strike a nerve??

Not going to respond to most of that, but I will say this

I care about as much about this little 951 as I do about my last pair of shoes. They were pretty comfortable

Here is the rest of my list
1. S2000 (not as fast in a straight line, but looks good and handles beautifully)
2. Miata ( Awesome all around car and can be made to look good and be very fast) not the best looking stock.
The rust problems with Nissans hadn't really changed that much at that point. I'm aware of some really fast SE-R based turbo engined 240SX's, but Nissans still tend to rust faster than most cars. I had a 1993 NX2000 that had a hole you could drop a golf ball through in the frame rail. This was a 6 year old Florida car. The hole may have been there a few years before, just not as large.

Many of the Japanese performance cars cut corners to get performance for the dollar. The insides are cheap, & they squeak & rattle a lot. Even the luxury cars cut corners. Out of the bin suspension, tiny gauge wiring, thin rubber on the CV, tie rod, & ball joint covers.
The R32 can be made a respectable track car, has a high end interior, but doesn't like running the quarter. The 6-speed gearbox is very short. First gear is so short it isn't even necessary to use it.
A modified Audi S4 can be made to run, & it can be made to handle very well. You could build a fast one for the price of that Vette.

Audi's are too heavy , same as the R32, great street cars , they feel like trucks on a track ... the only jap cars i would consider for track use, NSX, EVO and
STI's the others mentioned would require too much to make good track cars .....

My LS1 Camaro SS has done a 2:37 at Road America. The mod list was: Hoosiers, springs, brake ducts, stiffened torque arm, and a K&N filter. It was carrying 2 people.

An LS1 Camaro SS goes for 12-15K. Parts are very inexpensive. 17x9 wheels that weight 22lb each can be had for $400 per set. Front brake rotors are $26 each. Much less ultimate potential than the 944 T as more mods are added but pretty strong lap time potential per $ when nearly stock.

I'm not even going to get into recommending cars for this topic as the majority of lister's are 100% blind to other cars. While I still gladly pay them, there is more than one reason I've started buying up BMW and Nissan stuff.
you can fit 12" wheels (305mm) on a stock late rx7?

is this a track/race that requries good handling and is full of lots of twisties? my friend's camaro was scary fast, but mostly scary because it felt so heavy and like it wouldn't be able to stop quickly if needed.
