One car to consider is the 240 SX especially the later cars, handle great. Can get a lot of power of them, very neutral. Don't look as good as our cars or have the same emotion behind them, but are none the less a stellar car. I have a good friend with a 91 with a SR in it and it is a complete hoot to drive.
Here is the rest of my list
1. S2000 (not as fast in a straight line, but looks good and handles beautifully)
2. Miata ( Awesome all around car and can be made to look good and be very fast) not the best looking stock
3.Z32 TT ( a rocket in a straight line, hanles decently (HEAVY!!!!!), look great, and upgrades are cheap) However a pain in the rump to work on.
4. MR2 Turbo as previously mentioned problems
5. 3rd gen. RX7 (awesome car, but I couldn't put up with the cheap interior materials or the engine problems).

That was my list changed a bit with age from when I was looking for cars, in the end I ended up with the car that I thought was most attractive and had the most emotion. Definetely not the most reliable, but to me is the most unique and by far the prettiest.

Patrick, they can go low thirties with some mileage. You bring up a good point though.

Volvo 242, Corvette C5 (No reason for Z06 its not much better when moddified), Corvette C6, Mazda Rx7 FD, 5.0 Mustang Notch, Porsche 914.

I think all those cars can compete with a 951.

Porsche 930...the first turbo...can be had in the low $30's and boy oh boy do some of them have hips!

But yeah, other than that a Corvette is a good choice due to its disposability. You won't cry as hard when you put a Vette in the trees as you would a Porsche.

having passed a modded Z06 down in TX at an event, I'll still stick with a stripped down, lightweight 951 with around 400 to 450 at the flywheel ( which can be done with 17 and 18 psi with the right tuning, giving 350-380 rwhp ) and add great brakes, CO suspension and you have a very fun car...and reliable.

I had an AWD 2nd Gen eclipse with 400+ HP with ran 11's in the quarter. Handled pretty good and cheaper mods. spinning all four tires is crazy.

I prefer the Porsche!

How about the E30’s and E36’s, those are affordable and would make great street/track cars, and the mods are not as expensive. Still they don’t look as good as the 951’s and more common.

But I do love the C5 Z06 good power great looking car with a nice low profile. And they can be had for less than 30k all day.

Default Having both - Track 951S & 04Z

I would have to agree with Bret, a well set up 951 is hard to beat even in today's market. A DE set up Z06 will cost you somewhere in the med 20s to med 30s. My 951S has about 28K in it and it is not stripped down. It has many top times where plenty of z06s where present. If my (951S) was race preped it would be 1.5/2.0 sec. faster around most tracks then my 04Z. I would also agree that the 01 - 04 Z06s are great buys and get 25MPG on the way to the track.

Hell I know of 10 second Honda's running around that had their engine's assembled in the back of pickup trucks with no plastigauge.
2) inexpensive, name another car that can perform for less than 10k in almost any condition - Plenty, and even more that wont break the bank to keep them running. KA-T 240sx, SR20 swapped anything, any BMW inline 6 with a tuned stock DME and a 60-1 (400whp for under $5k and infinitely more reliable)
3) can haul kids and stuff ( 4 seats I have used them all) - To even consider a 944 a 4 seater is a JOKE. Sure I've used all 4 seats but comfort is not even in the same relm. I distinctly remember sitting ON the steering wheel while my passengers had their knee's around their ears
4) looks very modern considering it's age - I can agree with that
5) Is easy to make pretty good power See #2
6) light weight - Sure
7) fairly well engineered Stout engine, nice interior, yep yep, everything else?
8) can find a nice well taken care of example to start with. Becoming increasingly hard to do due to the prices spreading out more, you have more high dollar builds and more cheapo beaters than ever before not to many unmolested middle of the road examples left
I'm not even going to get into recommending cars for this topic as the majority of lister's are 100% blind to other cars. While I still gladly pay them, there is more than one reason I've started buying up BMW and Nissan stuff.

Hey Mike, do you think an e36 325/328 is a decent platform for forced induction? with some reliability ?

Of course, the M50/M52 is good to over 500whp reliably in stock form. Built block there are several in the 800-1000hp range. Not to mention parts are cheap in comparison to their Porsche counterpart.

An rx7 would be a good car, they can get into high hp really easy. They can also spool a huge turbo easily. The 240sx as mentioned can also be very fast but you need an engine swap to do it and they are very hard to find in manual and are usually rusty around the rear wheels. An evo can also be built pretty fast and you can still buy them new.

both cars are a waste of time for a track street car

BMW 's are a good alternative, e36 models make excellent steet/ track car but your power numbers are very optimsitic for a dual purpose e36... the 951 still trumps them for layout , setup and track speed.

Ski +1 on the 951 i will add , I'm a fan of the c5/c6 cars, great all round car, at that price point you can also get into a 911/996 based car ..

Mitsu's do make power , pretty unreliable gearboxes, ergonomics on the eclipse is total **** , a **** box at best compared to a 951, the evo's are a good street /track alternative , but the 951 will still hold up against this one for less money

+1 on the 930 , but @ 25000 + for an engine rebuild, put's it in a different price league
