Is the 951 the best pumped up street car/track car ever?
What other cars compare dollar for dollar, power for power, handling for handling, and looks for looks?

OK I'm in the mood to bite
To actually put some thought behind this car and it's counterparts. IMO it is a very good candidate to be a the top of the list heres why I think so
1) easy to work on, contrary to some peoples thoughts
2) inexpensive, name another car that can perform for less than 10k in almost any condition
3) can haul kids and stuff ( 4 seats I have used them all)
4) looks very modern considering it's age
5) Is easy to make pretty good power
6) light weight
7) fairly well engineered
8) can find a nice well taken care of example to start with.
Now lets run down the list of cars that may even be considered, my list anyway
LS1 camaro or t/a. **** handling and too heavy, too many
mustang, not appealing and crap handling too many
RX7, 2 seater and only the 3rd gen looks as good and it is a bit expensive
Supra, Heavy doesn't handle as good and now are expensive
Datsun Z series, nees compete updating but has a good look but only 2 seats
Merkur Xr4ti, looks not so good but has some other good features
Mr2 too small and 2 seats
I am personally glad I happened apon the 944 at the aution a few years ago I was looking for something to throw a SBC into and it fit the bill at the time I thought. Since then I have really come to appreciate the car(s). I have owned ALOT of different cars and for some reason I really like this car.

I sold my 944 and other than jeep I can't think of any other car I want for the price than a red 944 turbo. The latest model RX7 is tempting but that engine is so unreliable and you can't fit very wide rear wheels on it. Everything else is just way too expensive for my taste and doesn't perform as well. I think I'll be getting a jeep then getting an old early 944 and ripping it apart and making a cool street turbo look car with a 968 rear like this one minus the wing... and possibly a supercharged engine or ls1.

Having owned many Z's in the mid '80's, good luck on finding one w/o rust. Back then it was hard to find one. Same goes for the early RX-7. The 2nd generation MR2 is hard to get HP out of, expensive to do it, & is tougher to cool down the intake charge because of mid-engine placement. The 951 can be considered the small block of the Porsche world. It's a great value performance wise beacuse it's older. You can't compare todays cars with the past for performance to the dollar.

^How much do those go for Joe?
When I watched some of Tony G's video at the track recently he followed some recent Corvette which was on Hoosiers. I have to say that this guy was wriggling and squirming around and the car didn't look that convincing to me. Of course this could be due to many factors, but I can only comment on what I saw. How much does a recent 'vette go for with a few light mods and Hoosiers? Spend that much on a 951 and who wins around the track? Also, let's look at the 'vette in 20 years and see how it compares to a 20 year old Porsche.
