Legacy GT (in the US) has always been a 2.5 liter. The 2.5 Turbo first became available in the Legacy with the '05 redesign.
The WRX had a 2.0 Turbo from '02 to '05, then Sube switched that car to the corporate 2.5 T as well. The engine is generally considered to be underrated by Subaru, to put more difference between the "normal" WRX and the premium STi.
The Impreza WRX STi (can we get a longer name, please?) was released in '04 with 300 hp. The engine has since been "derated" to (I think) 293 hp - BUT THE POWER IS STILL THE SAME. The engine was NOT changed, but the SAE standard for measuring power was changed - so the same engine now is given a lower power rating than it would have been a year or two ago.
.........I'm a bit of a Subaru guy....... If Subaru made a RWD sports car, I would have two Subes, and never woulda bought a Porsche. For starters, the cars are _so_ easy to work on. And it annoys me to no end that my '97 Impreza wagon has vastly better steering feel and throttle response than my '88 Porsche.
Ah well - that's what I get for buying a 20 y.o. car, based on 35 y.o. technology! At least it looks good!

My gf has an Audi (can't remember the model A4?) with the 1.8 turbo. It's a super car. I love it. It's a cabrio.
Ofcoourse I remember Chris White's post about doing a timing belt on one. He had to remove the enire freaking front end. $$$$$$$$

for me FWD is a deal killer.
so if the choice was between the two, i'd go for the suby over the mazda3 for that reason.
if you are looking at audi's, i think the S4 2.7 turbo is nice, but they do say it costs a bundle if you blow the turbos which is not too uncommon.
for a fun kid hauler with low maintenace, the suby forester gt would likely be a good choice.
i looked at a dirt cheap sedan that was $21,000 which listed for 28k. mazdaspeed6. it handled well, looked well built, great pickup, but just didn't do it for me. but i can't really tell you why, it was a great car!

Audi S4 (2001-2002), has an inline 6 2.7L twin turbo and is AWD. It's also much lighter and has better front/rear weight ratio than all the later versions which are V8s.
It's the same car that Michael Galati won several of his 5 championships in.
They're selling for $12k-$20k now on autotrader.

anyhow, audis are all good, but damn they understeer! actually the new TT is one of the least understeering audis I have tried, a5/s5 also very good, of more angry models the new rs4 with 40/60 is also ok, but understeers badly on track and needs to be punished

Get a 1997-98 e36 m3 sedan with a 5speed. It will get in the high 20s mpg on the highway long as you keep your foot out of it. 12,000 will get you a decent example, but 15 or more will get you an excellent one. Theres nothing like a straight six either. They handle great and have decent pickup too, 240hp.
