For me it's the same which pistons iam using, i just want to have a set of 104mm turbo pistons which will work in my S2 block. I asked Mahle pistons from Lindsey as they do advertise them on their web pages. They were out of stock. Dave Lindsey wrote to me JE have pistons which will work in alusil bores. I asked some furter information but he never gave it to me. So all of you who have more experience building 3.0L turbo using S2 block without sleeving it, what alternatives i have ? I do not want to use original modified S2 pistons.

JP pistons are working with niklasil coated bore and moly rings. I do not know Olli do we have Niklasil coating in R-koneistus?

You mean we have our blocks recoated with nikasil? Don't know is that possible to do with alusil blocks. I suppose they do have a possibility to make nikasil coatings as well.

The picture I posted is a stock compression ration S2 piston and a 951 piston...but the beauty of a custom piston is just that – they can be made custom!! The crown thickness should not change.

I did not think to modify custom pistons, there is no point because you make it accordign to your application right?

What I wanted to say that if you going for low budget can you modify Stock Forged pistons for lower compressratio by removing material from top.

Therfore picture of stock piston and crown thikness would tell something for us..

I was just notified of this posting by a friend. With respect to the moderators, I have some relevant information that I would like to post. I have been working with Woessner since January this year and have used them in the Racers Edge BMW world Challenge engine. Back in the late summer Woessner asked us at Racer's Edge to be the North American master distributor for their products. We will soon have a large inventory of products here in the states for Woessners standard production pistons which does include many Porsche applications including all variants of 944's and 968's, as well as pistons for 356's, 964, 965's, 993's, 911's and 996's. These stock pistons have been approved for use in stock engines by PCA club racing and these pistons are the same weight as the Porsche pistons (assembles weight between 700 and 730 grams each). The weight issue is a requirement for class legality within PCA racing. We also have lighter designs available for those customers who are not encumbered by PCA rules. I have been sending samples to engine builders like Chris White and Jon Milledge all over the country and have been receiving very positive feedback. The price point is very good and a complete set is about $670 which includes rings, wrist pin and clips. As far as coatings and uses go, Woessner has coatings for Alusil as well as coatings for use in Nickasil or bare iron sleeves. Interestingly, their 911 cylinders and 996 replacement sleeves use a Plasma coating which is the latest in high tech, super slick coatings. VW is using Plasma in some of their aluminum block/cylinder engines and they have seen roughly a 3% power increase due to the coating. Companies like 9ff use the Woessner pistons and sleeves in the engines they build and they are widely used in the European WTCC series. BMW Motorsport manufactures all their race engine for all of their factory race cars using the Woessner piston which I believe says quite a bit about the Woessner quality. Woessner is coming over next week and we are displaying for the first time at the PRI show in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive. The show runs from Dec 14th through 16th and we will be in booths 821,1020,819,and 1018 . Stop by and see us if you are there.

Kpoeltl: Thank you for that posting. I was hoping to learn more about these pistons and who uses them; and in what series too. I think Chris is going to be at the PRI show too, so I'm sure he'll see you there. If there are any web sites you can point us to, so we can learn more about them, please let us know. I went and visited the Wossner site, and quite honestly, it wasn't that helpful for me - no offense. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to post here and sharing that information.

Have a great day.

RE: Dave Lindsey's Swain Coated pistons: Thats it? Done? Buy a custom Al Piston made with 4032, and coat it with PC-9? Thats it? All this ragamrole about proper coatings, etc, and the PC-9 is surviving at 14psi or more?

Hey

I was just compairing the difference in design in Heritage Mahle Pistons VS Wössner pistons. Mahle ones have much wider dome area and its kind a round shape but not so deep.. where Wössner pistons seems to have deeper dome what is more like oval shape! Can someone comment how the difference can effect perfomance etc..

Heritage Mahle 16 valve pistons look more like NA 968 pistons with deeper dome

Wössner 16 valve piston on right 8 valve on left. Dome area is looks deeper then mahle but area is more oval shape instead and also deeper dome compaire Mahle

Stock 968 pistons from workshop manual,

Chris do you have picture of 968 NA piston?

I have seen the coatings come off after the engine was opened up, nothing left on top of the piston which was in red if I memory serves me right.

That is fully understandable. But if LR has figured out that the PC-9 STAYS, thats a big deal.

If we look more closely this picture, there is mentioned Kolben Schmidt AG. I got a message from Germany that there might be a possibilty to get 968 Turbo pistons from them
