A couple more answers –
The 2.5 block and the 3.0 block are quite different internally. The webbing or floor of the block was raised up on the 3.0 and the individual cylinders were joined together (‘siamesed’).

Take a look a the first picture of the sleeves – see the large step in OD that is about 2/3 of the way down the outside, that is where the sleeve will rest on the floor of the block. The thinner area below that goes through the floor of the block (and it is a ‘mild’ interference fit), the three grooves get O-rings to seal the coolant. The 3.0 block has this step an inch or so higher. In addition the 3.0 sleeves are notched out for the air channels between 1&2 and 3&4.

The size limitation is based on the wall thickness of the sleeves and how that interacts with the floor of the block.

Joe – the block looks pretty good!

Hi Chris,
How mild a fit are we looking at ? I presume the difference in expension
of the two materials are taken into consideration. with regards to the JE
pistons, which type of forged material are use for this application ?

I see, that makes perfect sense. You would have to do a lot of machine work to make the 3.0 sleeves fit in the 2.5 block. Thanks for the explanation!

2618 aluminum alloy. The fit is -.001" and that along with the O-rings will deal with any difference in the rate of expansion.

I'm a little curious about the pattern of the coolant holes, it's hard to tell from the photos but it seems that the two end sleeves have the same pattern and the two middle sleeves share pattern? Do you know what the theory behind the hole placement is?

I am installing them soon and then I will line up the headgasket with the deck created by the sleeves – that should answer some questions!

Chris,
The fit of -.001 inch, is it cold interference fit or hot meaning
placing the engine block on a hot plate before press fitting.
Can I buy just the sleeve & pistons ?

-.001 cold – but then you need to heat the block to install the sleeves.
Since you are a little far away to be shipping a block I could set up a deal for you.

ah cool, so they are for function and not a side product of FEA.
NZ951: The time was still early in the evening, I hadn't gone out yet. I didnt drink this weekend, I was hanging out with younger highschool friends; but you are right about ME students. It really goes for pretty much any major at my school, drinking is a part of the culture; although the administration is trying to change that regarding recent tragedies here. A number of colorado students have been lost to alcohol this year, my school bearing the majority.

So should I take that 3000 and multiply by 2 for a V-8 application?

Sorry – Doubt they would work – different webbing at the bottom of the cylinders.
If you 928 guys would just break your engines more often then Darton might consider making some for you!!!

Thats what I suspected. There is almost a complete lack of it where you would tie in the sleeve.
