The cheapest way to get a correctly built one is to get one from someone else who is swapping a 3.0 in instead of the 2.8

Hi David,
Got a question for you. You're running a dry sleeve
106mm bore right ? How much material is left
after boring out the cylinder ? Lastly what pistons
& sleeves are you using ?

Thanks

Yes dry sleeve, I have not checked remaining cylinder material, the sleeve has a ledge on the top side so no old cylinder showing. I could have checked from the bottom side when I installed new rings the correct way, but I did'nt. Rage might be able to help as he was present during his block machining.

JE pistons and rings

Chromolly sleeves

Hi David,
Thanks. Wow that's alot of material that's being
removed. What kind of clearance are you running
with the JE pistons ? I wonder about the long term
reliability of sleeving the block this way. I'm awaiting
Darton to produce the M.I.D sleeves which I feel is a
much better approach to sleeving. Oh, one more
question. How is the sleeve fitted ?

Thanks again

Thanks again

006" clearance piston to cylinder wall.

Yes, the Darton M.I.D. sleeved may be a better way, but was not an option for me 2 years ago when I started my build.

MotorWerks in SoCal did the machine work 1-800-841-1014, they can give you details that I don't know.

Reliability ?? I will find out

When is MID going tobe available for the 944 J? IS this going to be application specific, or are you just waiting for the generally same-size sleeves to be available?

Hi Brendan,
Spoke to a guy at Darton. I was informed that they
were testing the sleeves on a 968 & 951.
Latest news I heard is that it's gonna be available
early next year which is fine by me. Got to start
saving more dollars. One other issue to settle is
piston material. Get the wrong type performance
may turn out to be average. I heard that Arias
are working closely with Darton to address this.
Will have to wait & see. Would'nt it be great to
be able to run 110 mm pistons with 3L crank !!!!

110mm bore x 87.8mm stroke (3.0L Crank) = 3338cc (3.34L)

Man........your nuts

Closed deck sleeves are now available for the 3.0L and the 2.5L.
Largest bore for the 3.0l block is 106mm, largest bore for the 2.5l is 104mm

One 3.0l turbo is being tested, I think there is one 2.5lNA block being tested..

Fairly expensive procedure... But if it works (testing will tell), it might be worth it.

I never measured or got the information. Danno looked at my pictures and guessed 3mm original cylinder, 3mm dry sleeve, for 106mm bore. Stock is 9mm original cylinder, 100mm bore for the 2.5L block.

From the pics, the ledge at the top of the sleeve looks to be around 9mm thick. I also used engine filler for the bottom half of the block, so the areas with the hardest load on the cylinders are well reinforced.

Hi Fast951,
Thanks for the info. BTW, why is it that the max
for 2.5 is 104 & 106 for 3L ? Is'nt the M.I.D a
wet sleeve set-up where by the original sleeve
is machine off & replace with the M.I.Ds ?

Thanks

We are doing 2.8L conversions with Darton sleeves. It is expensive but it is the best.We are finishing one of our project cars right now and we will set the new bar.How does 475 at the wheels at 1 bar of boost on 91 octane pump gas sound? What about 500 at the wheels at 1.2 bar of boost on 91 octane pump gas? Well stay tuned. We are headed to the dyno in a couple of weeks. We are waiting for the 960cc injectors to come in for the beast.Yes it needs lots of fuel:^)

The bore size limits are what the guys at Darton informed me. Yes it will be a wet sleeve.. The limitation is due to the way the sleeve goes into the block.. I have not used this type of sleeves yet.. It appears that Tim at SFR is already working with Darton, so he might have more info to share. Oh yes, and it's not cheap...
