How much for a clutch job?
Car's driving weird, RPMs hopping around, time for a clutch.
How much do mechanics charge, so I don't have to go through the hassle..
Also, how long would it take for a novice of 951s to change a clutch himself?
I hear it takes the pros a good 20something hours..

For some great step-by-step procedures, try these:

Strictly German in Pasadena quoted me at 1200 for parts and labor, 2 days lag time. Would take only a day if you push them, but they like to get things right. Mine's going out too, but don't want to do it quite yet.

Kelly,
$1200 parts and labor, is that for real?? If you consider $700 parts, that leaves $500 for labor... at 20 hours, that makes their shop rate come out to be $25? Where I live, shop rates are $100... :-(
Do you have their contact information handy by any chance? I may have to have a clutch job done in the near future as well!
Thank you!
Gary.

The quote was over the phone, and they use sachs parts.

I don't think its a 20 hour job, the shop owner quoted me as 2 days of careful work, so 12 hours if pushed. Also this price probably assumes that you have the updated headers and cross-over pipe.

Is that quote applicable to the 89 turbos?
The 89 turbo has the 2 piece crossover pipe, whereas the 86 has the one.
Is this correct? I'm reading off of Clark's website.

it's not 20 hrs for an experienced shop, not on the two piece pipe.
more like 10.
your welcome to use my procedure.

I really hope I have the 2 piece pipe to save on the time. I have a '86 951 but it seems to be a later model because when I went to put new chips in, it has the 28 pin and not the 24. So I really won't know until I get under there and look but it's to cold here to do that, 15F right now.

What do you mean run funny? It was like that when I bought the car always drove fine. Then when I got Guru chips that is when I noticed the 28 pin and had to get a new set of chips for the car. But what would it matter in the 28 compared to 24?

No difference the fuel/ignition maps between the 24-pin DME vs. 28-pin non-S DME chips. People who had problem were TurboS owners who found out they had 24-pin DMEs with non-S chips. I made a special 24-pin TurboS DME chip for those folks.
"What must I remove on the '51 to gain access to the clutch. $700 in parts, correct?"
The rate-book says 16-hours to do the clutch and most shops can do it in about 12-hours (2-days). I've found it's faster to just pull the engine rather than work my way from the back with removing the tranny, exhaust and torque-tube.

I think he would charge me about 500 for the clutch job. So yea, that's sounds right.
