every time i've inquired at tint shops they figure they'd have to do two pieces and try to meet them on a defroster line.

For sure there is. Not "willing" to do it doesn't seem like a good business model. Recommend you call your local dealership and just ask them who they refer their clients to.

It can be done, but as you have already noted, it is difficult and some shops are reluctant to do it. I had a place quote $300 to scrape off old tint and install new tint on a hatch that was out of the car. I'm pretty sure I have had entire sedans tinted for less than that.

They also said it was likely they would destroy the rear defroster when removing the old tint.

I had it done on my previous 951 in a shop in San Diego. Sorry I do not remember the name of the shop or the price. It is doable and it was done really well.

Where are you located?
A shop near me will do it. Owner said they don't really like to (944 is a PITA apparently), and although he really should charge extra for it, he doesn't.
So yes, just need to find the right shop.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I live in N. Va and so far have only contacted the best shops listed. No doubt in my mind its a PITA problem more than a can't do problem. The reality is that it's worth the price to save the interior as well as reduce the insane amount of heat that green house in the back pulls in.
I guess I just keep asking around.
Very respectfully,
Nachoz

I did it myself, LOTS OF PATIENTS. A man in town here actually spray tints the inside of windows. But he's really good at spraying cars and airbrushing art on cars, boats, anything.

I had mine done years....ago. The tint on the car was old and purple. I had them strip the windows for the re tint. I do remember the guy quoted $160 for the entire job. OK no problem. I remember the guy saying, yeah come back in a few hours. So, when I return the guy is totally pissed. Complaining that the rear window was a nightmare and I need to pay extra. I got outta there for the original price but that was probably close to 15 years ago.

Would it be any easier to remove the entire rear hatch with frame, invert and clean it while laying on, say, a mattress, then installing the tint before re-installing the hatch on the car?

Obviously, I've not tried any of this yet, so those who have please chime in.
