Default Is this normal (Bondo on rear fenders)

I got tired of having a crushed in rear fender, so I pulled the PSD pump and banged the bulk of the dent out. During this, the paint cracked (further) and some large chips flew off. These chips are grey through most of their 2.5mm thickness. Is this the normal factory finish for GTS rear fenders, or is this the result of previous repairs?

Thanks,
Paul

If it was anything other than a GTS I'd say definitely a previous repair. Because I don't know the GTS I'm going to say most likely a previous repair. Applying plastic is time consuming and thus expensive, not something a factory is interested in.

It's definitely a repair of some sort, original factory finish is normal primer, base colour and clear coat

I don't know if it is an optical illusion but inside the aperture where the rear tail light assembly sits should be sealed by the plastic of the bumper line with the power cables coming through a grommet- the photo appears as though behind the lamp assembly it is open- am I imagining this or is it actually that way?

Fred --

I think that pictures is showing the corner marker lamp, not the taillight.

You're either hallucinating ... or the time has come to use a braille keyboard Fred

That's the corner marker lamp. The cables inside are related to the PSD pump.

Dave,

That time came and went ages ago!

Must be those boys over the pond and their idiot lights-

Glad we do not have to suffer those things- I thought something did not look right proportions wise - assumed it was me at bedtime.

Paul- repairing the bumperline is possible and takes quite some effort to get it right. The cracked paint suggests they failed in your case yet alone whatever they used to cover things up. I seem to remember someone doing a really good thread on how to repair these things- no idea who started it.

We were talking about this, today....

Certainly this kind of repair isn't planned at the Porsche factory....nor do they add this kind of filler on normal panels on the assembly line.

However, no matter how careful they are, at the Porsche factory, scratches and dings are inevitable.

Certainly, Porsche isn't going to throw away a car with a small ding....it's going to be repaired.

No one is going to know when this occurred.

I stripped an original paint 73 911 to bare metal once and found some small bondo filled dents in the roof. The filler was under the primer, right on the metal...factory dent fix.

Any chance this car was in NJ about 7 or so years back? Looks like a Black GTS that someone purchased here for big $$ and had some issues to it the rear fenders and the bumper especially was filled and repainted and it was begining to crack. I believe they had resprayed it again.

Would be interesting if it was the same. IIRC there were also dents to the subframe where it was improperly supported at one time.

It may well be the same car. I bought it in Salt Lake City, and previous to that it was in Napa, CA, but I do seem to remember some Northeast history in its records... and I found a NJ turnpike token under the seats at one point.

The rear end seems to be a bit too narrow, as well... causes the reflector strip to get pinched between the taillights.
