Seems like it would be easier to title it in a more human-friendly state. Get a quick llc in Montana or have someone you know do it in some other normal state.

Likewise... it was great to meet you, Marc, and chat about cars.

Plenty of work to do, but he's made some great progress. Despite the initial condition, it's cleaning up very well. The dash is in excellent condition, so that's a big plus. Even the temp sensor "grill" was in perfect shape.

Congrats again on the find!

Had a look at the fuel pump situation today, after removing the fuel gauge sender and having a look inside, I decided to drop the tank. Its BAD.

As I previously mentioned, the fuel cap was loose when I bought it, broken red cover and not tight. The little swing-door inside the filler neck? Totally rusted, partially missing meaning its now in the tank. Fuel had turned to goo, there is goo build-up all over the bottom of the tank.

I tried to remove the in-tank pump, it disintegrated into little pieces, the filter material that surrounds it is goo and is keeping me from removing what is left of the pump. The plastic ring around at the bottom of the tank has some chips, leading me to believe that it is disintegrating as well.

Looks like I'm buying a new fuel tank. I see an '80 on ebay and it sounds like they are all compatible from 80 on. Any advice?

I am pursuing the NYS route first since that is where the car was last sold, and where the docs I have all leave off.

My next stop was going to be my home state (commonwealth) of VA, they have an "affidavit in lieu of title" process but I figured my pursuing the Title in the obvious way first would increase my chances of getting Virginia to process my application, should NY fail.

Its rare for any government these days to work for the people and not the other way around but failing NY and VA, I'll be looking for states with flexibility. I'll keep Montana in mind

Cruddy Fuel Tank Update

I did some searching and took some advice from other sources on how to clean the gunk out of my fuel tank. Recommendations included acetone and vinegar. I purchased a gallon of acetone, a gallon of vinegar, and a toilet brush and headed to my shop last night.

Starting with what I figured would be least likely to damage the plastic tank or plastic baffle in the tank, I tried the vinegar approach. It really didn't do much and I didn't feel comfortable just filling the tank and leaving it with anything acidic, alkaline, or corrosive for long periods. Rinsed and reset.

Next some simple simple green. Again, took some off with brushing but no noticeable difference. Rinsed and reset.

Next try: Purple Power. Checked the label and it didn't say anything about melting through plastic so tried some on the outside of the tank with no noticeable sliming of the plastic. Holy cow, the purple liquid turned rust/yellow before I even started brushing. After about an hour of swishing and scrubbing, the tank is almost totally spotless. I brought it back to the house and rinsed it thoroughly with water and left it to dry.

This took off not only the evaporated residue of gas/ethanol, but the degraded goo of what was left of the internal pump and filter. This I had to fish out with a magnet and tongs because it was so swollen with rust and assorted crap that it wouldn't come out through its hole. I really didn't think this tank was salvageable and had already started shopping for a used one. Yay PP. Now I just need a filler neck.

I'm really interested to see how the paint cleans up too.

It just amazes me how somebody can park a car knowing that certain things need to be maintained and just NOT do anything!!!

Keep up the good work!!

True, there are more human-friendly states out there, but in order to re-title in most states, you have to prove residency. Even if you can get around residency by showing that you've paid excise tax (Maine I believe), you still have to pay transfer/sales tax on the vehicle...then once again if you're looking to transfer title to your home state. It could get expensive.

After a wash and wax, the paint looks really nice. There are stone chips and a few blemishes, and a spot on the rear PU valance where the paint has flaked off.

IF everything works out mechanically, I'll bring it by my paint guy to see if it can be buffed and touched-up. It is a head turner as is and I'll take some pictures if I can get the car under its own power this weekend.

The PO is deceased and I get the impression he lost interest in the 928 after "upgrading" to a BMW SUV in the last years of his life. After his death, the family knew the Title was a mess, they didn't need the money, and they had other things going on. They're good folks, the Widow and Son have both thanked me for taking care of what was just a problem for them.

and... thanks for the encouragement! I love these restoration threads myself so I'll do my best to keep this one interesting and picture-rich!
