Default This was stuck on my oil pickup

The tech thinks it was the remnant of a parts number sticker from the GTS oil pan baffle that had been installed when the pan gasket was done last time (in 2000).

I'm amazed that paper held together for 16 years. A real testament to Porsche quality

You mean you're supposed to remove the parts number sticker before installing it? Who'd have thunk it?

Nicole,

What prompted you to drop the sump thus finding that scary interloper? If you had oil pressure issues you would have seen something much earlier unless of course the thing let go recently. Interesting that it was able to manifest itself in such manner.

Hopefully no serious damage

The motor mounts had gotten weak after 16 years. While there were no oil leaks from the old cork seal, I decided to have a silicone oil pan gasket installed as a preventive measure. I just wanted it done right while it was accessible.

No, I never noticed oil pressure issues. But we all know that once you notice them, it can be too late. In this case, there was no problem or damage - the bottom end of the engine still looks like new.

It's just ironic that it was a result of what was supposed to be an improvement: The addition of the GTS oil pan baffle.

110k miles now - super smooth and barely broken-in.

You found this potential "bomb" because you were diligent in your approach- an element of good fortune - indeed yes. Had you been in a high speed bend at over 6k rpm with that thing in there you might be still picking up pieces of engine from the tarmac.

"Chance favours the prepared mind"- every time - well done!

Did they pull the cradle to look at the bearings?

Apparently, the secret to label removal is an extended soak in warm engine oil. Floats right off!

I can tell you the tech was quite baffled when he saw this.

Keep in mind that the car has never been on a track or on the Autobahn, was generally not pushed to its limits, and the tech did not see anything of concern. Now there is still a GTS baffle (without sticker), and a brand new silicone seal. I don't think anyone will get to look at this part of the engine for a while.

I just posted this for entertainment; you don't see this everyday.
