It'd have to be before the Nikasil, can't imagine how one would install a deck plate and get the gasket surfaces re-planed and finished without munging up the Nikasil at the top of the bores.

I just called the other day but he was at work at strange hours. I like those kind of convos.

That's a good answer right there.

Reliable under what conditions? Give a 928 to your average American who is used to cheap parts and abusing/neglecting their chevys and it will stop working in a 3 years, but I think a well maintained garage kept version will run forever. Your average American should not own one of these unless its a love affair of the car. For its year, the 928 is better than most for parts reliability, comparing and maintenance intervals, apples to apples, except for maybe the timing belt tensioning system and the torque tube pressure issue. But there has been excellent timing belt and torque tube clamp upgrades that fix those problems for years now which no longer makes them a big deal.

Lart needs to look at the real facts:

1. The only sports car to be named Car of the Year at its introduction.
2. The only Porsche that was TRULY a Porsche due to it clean sheet design and production history.
3. The favorite car of David Hemmings. It is still his daily driver and the only car that he personally wrote a book about.
4. My go to car for all long distance road trips.

Once you take advantage of the current upgrades available today, the 928, especially the post 86 models, will be transformed into a practical, highly reliable, very safe, super cool GT touring car that will draw a crowd everywhere you go.

The Porsches he extolls have ALL benefited from the developments that were first used in the 928. There was no rear engine Volkswagen/Porsche of that era that would allow you to go on a long trip in complete comfort and leave any other car in the rear view mirror....flat land or winding mountain roads.

My 30 YEAR OLD S-4 still embarrasses jackasses who think their modern wannabe copy of a bygone car can rival my 928. Granted, there are plenty that will, but not many. You just have to pick your time a place. The 928 is not a one dimensional road car, it loves it all.

I challenge Lart to put a 911 from the 80's against a 928 and see who walks away with their tail between their legs.....

I must be doing something wrong. 148,000 miles of which 35,000 is boosted and my block isn't cracked. I can jump in and drive 1000 miles with no worries. In fact, going to drive from Iowa to lower Texas in two weeks rather than trailer it cause it is such a nice car to drive. What am I missing here?

Curb stone which will rip alternator or AC compressor off from block.
