Default 928 5 Speed transmission / clutch issue

I'm hoping someone might have some insight into my trans/clutch issue on my 1980 928S euro 5 speed. I'm stumped.
Was shifting thru the gears on a on-ramp to the highway when I suddenly heard a rattling noise under the car which sounded like a muffler dragging on the pavement.
After coasting into a rest stop and shutting the car off I walked around finding nothing visibly wrong, when the guy parked next to me walked over and pointed to 3 large steel ball bearings covered in grease laying on the pavement just behind the car and said he saw them fall off my car when I came to a stop.
When I pressed the clutch, shifted into first gear and released the cluth nothing happened as if the car was still in neutral even though it was in the 1st gear position. I tried 2nd gear and reverse also with no results.
Very bizarre to find the 3 large ball bearing laying on the ground right where the car came to a stop and I'm stumped.

C/V joint fell off (axle), throwing out the *****. Transmission is now disconnected from one of the rear wheels....you aren't going anywhere with that failure.

Happens when the hardware doesn't get properly torqued.

Yup. Not a costly fix, but you gotta tow it home, jack it up, and put a new CV on it. Might as well do the other side too. torque them to spec.

First post since almost 4 years OP. Welcome, don't be a stranger.

Thanks!
It's been a while since I posted. Originally had a 1985 928 that I sold years ago and just recently took over my dad's 1980 euro model which is in need of a lot of work. Engine wise runs pretty well (for a car with 140k+ miles) and just did some updating on the suspension (Bilstein shocks, tie rods, steering rack, ball joints, etc). Next going to tackle all the electrical gremlins, find someone to repair the broken speedo, and take a stab at the interior along with replacing brown and black pascha seats are in rough shape. All that and would like to upgrade the wheels to the turbo cup style like on the GTS.
Thanks again for helping me to diagnose the issue!

Might want to slow down on replacing that Pasha if you were going to use something else. The Pasha design has become somewhat of a cultural icon with the 928. The material is avail so consider going back with orig stuff.

Enjoy, don't be a stranger.

Thanks. I like the look so definitely want to try and replace with the black and brown Pasha. Do you know of any good sources where I can still find it?

Thanks. I decided to have the 928 towed to a local guy (Autobahn Performance in Peabody, MA) to have the work done. Hoping it doesn't take too long, been enjoying the new Bilstien's on the twisty roads here.

Roger from 928sRUS can also get it through a different supplier.
