Newer car (2001+) that is most like the 928?
I used to have an 80s 928S. Finest car I ever owned. I used it as a daily driver. It was pretty old and beat, but I've still yet to test drive anything better.
I kinda wish I grabbed a 928GT/GTS when they were reasonably priced (I remember them being about $20k at some point). Anyway, that isn't going to happen, and even a 1994 car is getting a bit old for something to daily drive.
Is there anything made recently that is similar to form and performance of the 928? I thought about a used 991 - that's a bit out of my price range right now and doesn't have that damn handy hatchback, and I don't like the sound of the flat six (sacrilege, right?)
Thought about the C7 corvette, too... I only sat in one but I can tell I don't like it. The 718 cayman looks interesting - I like the fact the turbo is thrusty - but it isn't even out yet and I don't want to buy new or buy the first year something is out.
What car made recently would be the most like the 928?

Not sure there is one? Especially if looking for a manual and something not well into 6 figures. The cayman is not - at least the one I drove. I sold my C63 AMG last year and although mightily fast was not a 928 replacement. Maybe the AMG GT if auto okay (not sure MB is making manuals any more).
Would like to see what others come up with - I have been trying to replace the AMG since last year and right now the C7 is top of mind.

used F-Type coupe?
jaguar XK? (though a friend of mine has an older xk8 'vert - that car is really LONG and the handling is sloppy)
I also remember driving a 300ZX twin turbo back in the day I remember thinking felt like my 928, though I could be misremembering. The current 370Z is awful.

I'd love one of these or a AMG GT, though I don't want to spend more than $50k.
I did love the manual transmission on my 928S, though I'd probably be happy with a DCT/PDK or even one of the 8speed slush boxes. My GFs audi has the 8speed and it is sweet.

Check out the "Hot for Sale pick of the week 991" sticky on the RL 991 forum. 2012.5+ 991's C2S can be had for approx.$ 60k. Very similar dimension's as a 928. T

As you cap it at 50k, you might want to look at an Aston V8 Vantage. Excellent car for the money! It is also dimensionally very close to a 928.
Or just buy that 95 GTS on eBay with the rebuilt title. In 10 years when the value doubles you will have had a free car when you sell it.
If you want to really splurge, get an Aston V12 Vantage with a manual, or an Ferrari 599. Or, even a base 2005-2007 Ferrari 612. Huge trunk and 4 seats.
Keeping is simple, and budget friendly, V8 Vantage is the way to go. Excellent car all around.

I would say the Six series BMW- with the 650 vee 8 but that was not available until 2007. You can pick them up Stateside for about $20k now.
Probably a bit softer than the 928. That or the M6.

I think that the 928 drives a lot like an older corvette... at least like a C4 for certain, and the C5 had lots of improvements over a C4. That's just my own personal experience though. Heavy steering at slow speeds, low to the ground, hatchback, double wishbone suspension, etc....
