Cup 1's are4 the most beautiful IMHO. I never cared for the 2's or 3's for that matter.

Sucks that someone has now put in a different stereo too.
Pretty sure the original Cup 2's from Chuck's GTS ended up here on a local owner's S4. When he was restoring his car he found the wheels for sale online and after posting about where he got them Chuck piped in and said they were the wheels from his former GTS. They have since been refinished in silver and riding proud!

Agreed. For museum piece money, the car should be museum piece correct...including the correct wheels. I'd think that anything that would cause a point deduction in a Concours event should be corrected. At the very least as a tribute to how Chuck kept this jewel of a car. I know that if I dished out $190k on a car like this, I'd expect it to win every Concours event that it entered.
As nice as they look on this car, the Cup l's should be swapped out for the correct ll's. Were those calipers red from the factory?

Nope, according to the 2012 ad posted by NoVector, car had red GTS calipers on but came with original BIG BLACKS, just like the "original" Cup 2s and shocks.

Too bad the owners between 2012 and 2018 chose to deteriorate the car's provenance/history (some what to a little extend) by making MORE MONEY by selling the Cup 2s and Big Blacks "on the side", I am sure.

Just noticed it is an auto... Maybe that's why still available? Although I do remember driving Bob V's previous auto, so I know that is still an excellent experience.

I spoke to the owner, it's an hour away. Worth it for DIY to fix up? What is cost to paint properly, (Put back to original Slate Grey)... talk me out of this!

Shortest answer to your question: No. If you want a project don’t start with a 928 that needs a repaint of a repaint unless you own a paint shop.

Slightly longer answer: It all depends upon your goals. But, for $10k you can find one with ‘better bones’ I would think. The cost of repaint depends upon how far you want to go to conceal the evidence of the paint work. The range is $500 Maaco special to giving the paint shop a stripped shell on a dolly. The ‘cheapest’ way is to do all the pre/post disassembly/reassembly yourself. Figure 50 hours *minimum* for that. Plus parts. Plan on replacing all the trim.

Agree 100%. I had spent some time researching when the red 1990 on BAT was for sale which need a paint job. For starters, not all shops (around here atleast - Northern WI) will take the job, they prefer insurance jobs. Second, ranges on paint jobs can be anywhere from 5k to 15k+. $5k was the cheapest I could find. Removing trim pieces are the expensive part of the job. If you remove the trim and prep the car, it would be much, much cheaper.

As Dave says it depends on what you want to do. My 928 was a non-running project that needs a paint job. But I plan on owning it for another 30 years. I fixed all the immediate need mechanical bits so I can drive it and have fun. Now I will begin to slowly restore restore the interior and the rest of the non critical mechanical stuff. All the while not giving a hoot if the paint is getting scraped and nicked up at the parking lots. Eventually the interior and mechanical stuff will be near all restored. At that point I will look into a repaint. But it's honestly at least 10 years away. If you want to start with an S4 with very good paint that runs and drives, then I think you'll have a hard time finding one for $10K. And in 5 years from now 1989+ S4s like this, IMO, will be asking double.

Nate, wouldn't it make more sense to repaint before doing the interior? Haven't done it, but others would say maybe getting the paint done 1st so that the redone interior doesn't get trashed by the repaint.

Looking like I need to repaint MOST of my cars!

Ouch!

Note that I did not write ‘very good paint.’ I wrote ‘good bones.’ I really think that there are 150k-mile S4 autos out there that have not been repainted that could be acquired for $10k or less. Oh, sure, they will likely need a repaint and will have five-figure mechanical needs. But, that’s still a better starting place than this one.

I am doing a shell-out restoration of a 928 that was already re-painted once. In the process I ‘get’ to see where all the corners were cut the first time and now have the ‘opportunity’ to uncut those corners.

It makes sense if you have the time, parts-money, skills, and space to do a shell-out restoration and the ability to delay gratification for a period measured in ‘decade-fractions.’ Doing the interior and mechanicals a bit at a time allows you to keep the car on the road (more-or-less.)

Last, but not least, you don’t see the paint when you’re driving. I for one would rather drive a ‘rat-rod’ 928 than an ‘all-show-no-go’ 928.

Maybe. If you come across one, PM me. I'm interested. Seriously.
