If you are doing the water pump and tensioner, you might want to consider Ed's guardian pump to go with a porkentensioner. Takes away the nervousness of getting rid of the belt tension light and its close to the price of a Laso pump. That is the route I went.

When I had mine done, they replaced all the rollers, but refurbished the stock tensioner, all works fine 20k + miles later.

I would like to interject with a little background. I have been a gearhead since being a teenager. Young and dumb, with all the awful ideas, and no money to back it up. I was a bottom feeder dirtbag for years. However, I took pride in my work. My junk was junk, but reliable junk.
Slowly as time went by, my skills and finances improved. As did the quality of my vehicles. Granted, all of them have been American iron, with a smattering of Japanese experience thrown in for good measure.

I have been devouring the Rennlist 928 forum for almost 2 years. I have learned alot, but have not practically applied it to anything. You might say I am in for a rude shock as to the complexity and design of a German engineered car. You might be right. However...

My day(night) job is as Lead MultiCraft Repair Technician in a heavy steel stamping plant. I deal with a Mueller Weingarten 2000 ton mechanical transfer press. I also deal with a six unit press line of Schuler hydraulic presses, 2000 to 600 tons. They are German as hell!
Overly complicated mechanically, no-sh*t complicated when it comes to the PLC logic.

So, I do have some experience dealing with German engineering.

Seth K. Pyle

...and yes, the Red Witch is still going to be a rude shock to my system.

Itoolio: To be honest, I am in the stock tensioner camp. Nothing wrong with the Ptensioner, just not for me. Thanks, though!

The Forgotten On: Thanks, good to know that the 86.5 has the updated tensioner. What was updated from original?

chris0626: Thank you very much! I am quite smitten...

docmirror: I thought about leaving the water pump, but since the shop was in there...And, I have decided to whack my finances and get alot of items done and taken care of. The facility is installing a Porsche water pump. I already have to messages at Roger's for parts inquiry for various items.

Good point about driving the car before making any decisions about the exhaust. I have almost 600 miles of driving coming up to make up my mind.

Chris Lockhart: Thanks for clueing me into that car! I am hooked!
More importantly, THANK YOU!!! for the offer of a cross brace. Shoot me some photos and I will get together with you. That is awesome of you!

hwyengr: Good to know that there is most likely no thrust bearing damage. I have an inquiry request at Roger's for the Jim Morehouse CD's, a set of service covers, and a set of Lift Bars. Just waiting on a reply.
Thanks for the link to the download of the WSM!

Cosmo Kramer: I have looked at Ed's Guardian water pump system, and have been impressed. For this round, the shop is putting in a Porsche water pump. When I do this again in 5 years, we shall see. Thanks for the advice!

OTR18WHEELER: Farris, the shop is installing three new rollers, one new bushing, one roller boot, and one roller bolt. I am working on them to just refurbish the existing tensioner. Evidence all over the 928 forum shows a tensioner is only replaced when it is completely trashed. There are hundreds(thousands?) of refurbished tensioners quietly doing their job out there.

Thanks guys! I will keep the updates and information coming.
I will start posting the PPI list, photos, and the service/repair estimate soon.

Seth:
The exhaust still has the intermediate mufflers. No drone at highway speed. Same setup as my '86.5 "Blackie". If you can get Auto Assets to rebuild the tensioner, It's only some seals, O-rings, Boot and clamps. I didn't know anybody would pay for a new one. I'm a Porken tensioner fan. It's a modern 21st century solution to a '70s technology. Why do they put the timing belt warning light? Because the engineers didn't trust it and it was not til around 1985 they put the light in. Can we name any other car that has a timing belt warning light? Not that I know. Anyway, probably the shop would not install a Porken because they have to stand behind setting up the system to stock. I know of another shop in Columbus that would not do the Porken. I actually got my 86.5 going yesterday with the Porken after the timing belt install. Started right up. My other club member which did his timing belt along side mine at our tech session drove his car to Philadelphia this week. No issues. His is an '84 Euro 16 valve.

Seth, if you are alone at SITM this year, I would like to go ahead and reserve the shotgun seat for the fun run. * if * I get the white 82 drivable and bring it to SITM, I do not think I would trust it on the fun run yet...

buccicone: Mike, thanks for the heads-up on the exhaust. Good to know there are some mufflers under there. I am working on Eduardo to just refurbish the tensioner that is in there. I read something last night about how the stock tensioner really cannot deal with changes in belt due to load, while the Porken tensioner can. Hmmm...I will keep this in mind for then next TB/WP job.

AirtekHVAC: Ron, Shotgun is YOURS!

I am excited/nervous about today. This morning, Gary started disassembling the Red Witch. Excited because this is the next step to me getting the car. Nervous because of what lies beneath...

It seems you won't have trouble finding a suitable wrench for your rear axle nuts, should you tear a CV boot.

I'm fond of large extrusion presses, myself.

Adk46: You are right. Before this job, I had never seen a 110mm socket.

OTR18WHEELER: Wrong. I am driving the Red Witch as soon as I get her. I am not going to make mynusual mistake and go too far. I will work on her in bite sized chunks. One job at a time...

Yep, they can look so cute and cuddly from the top-side.

A couple things...

Motor mounts look wasted, engine appears to be well below the crossmember (granted, this is something you could do later).

Fuel lines appear to have been replaced, two running up along passenger side of engine, and it looks like they removed the factory fittings and just cut the tubing...and slid on new rubber hose and secured with a worm-gear clamp. I would have this looked at in more depth, just to be sure there is a raised area on the end of the tubing for the clamp to hold against...and not just straight/un-flared tubing. These should be checked before you travel any distance in my opinion...or at least heavily insure the car before you do.

Suspension looks suspect also, were there an record of the coil-over shocks being replaced (granted, again...this would be something you could tackle later).

Actually, a good portion of what the PPI mentions you could do yourself...there by...saving a ton of money.

Me, I'd drive up, rent a U-Haul trailer and for probably 6-7 hundred dollars and gas money...have it sitting in my garage.

However, if you want it done immediately...or do not have the mechanical abilities to do this...I guess, you'd have to have them do the major/engine damaging stuff first.

Good luck,

Brian.
