Just a heads up, Bill and I are going to run the Big Bend Open Road Race in Fort Stockton, Texas this April. Since it my first time there, we'll need to run in 150 mph class.

We'll leave the Bay Area Tuesday, April 19th, and should arrive the next day. The race is on Saturday the 23rd, so we should have a few days to check out the road (US 285) and the town.

If any of you are in the neighborhood, come by and say hello.

You could probably do fine in the Cayenne tow vehicle in the 150 class, saving the trouble of hauling the trailer and the race car all the way to Texas.

Isn't there some sort of reciprocity in ORR for "qualifying"? Something similar to SCCA and NASA honoring their licenses.


I think my SCCA license has died of old age at this point. The "open wheels" fell off a while ago from lack of use.

I'd have to install a roll bar, 5 point harnesses and a fire extinghisher, plus get some W or Y rated tires put on the Cayenne to run 150, then get the limiter taken off and computers reprogrammed. Seems like a lot of trouble, and it'll be good to see how the 928 runs on a different road. If it works out well, I could go back and run Super Sport or even Unlimited (since they only go up to 160 mph class in SS). Though I hear the road is a lot more challenging then the ones in Nevada.

As for reciprocity agreements between ORR groups, it seems to be very limited. At least they don't make me take Rookie School and start in the 110 class. I've been told if I had a FIA or similar racing license it might be easier to run in a faster class for the first time there.

I had to do the same thing when I started with the SSCC group. Bill was kind enough to let me use his 928 to do my 150 qualifying run in 2009 when my car had some issues ( http://928.jorj7.com/2009-norc/ ).

That is some beautiful country down there. Love hanging out in Big Bend National and State park. Me and the family just spent a week there during Thanksgiving week last year. The whole time I'm driving around the roads there I'm thinking, I sure wish I had the 928 here right now. Hwy 285 is about 60 miles or so away from the actual park. I have been down this road before, but my memory is fuzzy. I do remember the road was in great shape, well, for 75 mph anyway. Several spots with LOOOOONG straight aways.

We would love to come hang out and watch the racing, just not sure if we can make it. If we do, I will make sure to come say hello.

Have fun and good luck. It's been a long time for us but we've always enjoyed our stays at the Gage.

As you tune, remember the elevation. That whole area is >4000'.

I did that run a good number of years ago, with Lucky Ekman at the wheel and me as navigator.... lucky was the ethical side of Devek if there was ever one... He and bob Devor were legends...get there a week early and run it many many many times at normal speeds to get a feel for the road.... just a recommendation..... the elevation changes and the road take some unconventional turns.... This is just a recommendation. Nothing like a clueless farmer pulling out in front of you with a trailer when you are doing 180 plus...that is certainly a brown shorts moment....

That sounds like a great offer. I was going to ask my wife to find a place between Phoenix and Tucson since she loves to find a bargain, but I'll bet she can't find a better price then free. Besides kids and dogs are great, so that's a plus. I have to make sure it has two bed. Just because we're from the Bay Area, doesn't mean we like each other in that way, not there's anything wrong with that...

Plus it'd be a real treat to check out you 928s, that add something special to the trip. I'll check with Bill to make sure he hasn't made other plans.

I saw from the past results page that you were in the 1998 BBORR with Lucky in a 1999 928. Must have been a typo, but I'll bet it was still a thrilling ride. Bill suggested we leave a day earlier to get an extra day in to study the rode. 60 turns in 59 miles, in each direction, plus many off camber and/or decreasing radius turns should make it more challenging.

The events in Nevada are all over 4000 feet, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact the car seems to run a lot better at altitude. Lot less knocks above 4000 feet, don't know if it's the less dense air, cooler temps, or better gas outside of California...
