Sterling and I worked with IMI to make a lightweight starter that was orientated in such a way that the main harness connection was not against the oil pan. Major issue in the case of a crash and the starter shorting against the pan.
Other than that I have one fitted to my GTS and it works fine. Mine was made by IMI.

That eBay unit is not same as the one roger sells, if he still sells them.

The one on ebay appears to be clocked wrong. Clocking the starter as in the picture will fit most 928's but the starter will be canted out towards the exhaust instead of tucked up under the engine like the IMI model. Usually it will shorten the life of the starter due to the heat and will not fit with any headers. I worked with Matt @ IMI for over a year to get one set up properly so it is clocked right doesn't hang down too far and has the terminals in the right place. Now you might buy one of these starters on ebay and clock it 180 degrees out. If you do that the stud for the power cable will hit the oil pan so you have to cut it down... way down... and even then the nut will be less than 1/8th of an inch from the oil pan facing up. In the case of hitting any debris on the road could knock the starter up into the oil pan possibly starting a very nasty fire.
If you want one of these get them through Roger so you get the right one.

Also a lot of people that want to use the lightweight starter are doing so because of a pan spacer and that will not work at all with a stock starter, and if you are running a pan spacer then most likely you are running headers as well. I worked with IMI so their starter would work with a stock 928, one with headers and also with the pan spacer so that there is only one starter and so when people order one they would know what they are getting and that it would fit and that they don't have to monkey with it.
Lets say you don't hit anything... and the nut holding the battery cable vibrates loose and backs off a couple of threads. Then your battery cable will be shorting out on the pan. That could happen.... either way I was not comfortable with the tolerance between the power stud the cable and the pan. not to mention to use the starter with the stud on the top you had to put 3 layers of heat shrink on the cable to keep the cable connector from rubbing on the starter housing or pan... when that wears through you have the same problem.

Does the use of the pan spacer mentioned above help with the fitting of Headers?
If so where did you purchase the spacer and what do they cost?
Roger, I too would like to know the price on the starter
Thx

You might be willing to accept that risk but I am not. If I put something on my 928 It is because it is an upgrade with better specs or performance. I will not accept lower quality or tolerances that I do not feel comfortable with.

The pan spacer is more for resolving oiling issues by moving the oil further away the spinning crank in conjunction with an oil baffle. Nothing to do with headers.

Contact IMI directly and ask Matt for the 928 Starter. I was selling a couple every year so stopped stocking them.
Ake - if you need help getting them I am happy to sort and ship to you.

There a so many better things about the starter that Sterling developed with IMI that it is difficult to know where to start.
1. The starter sits directly below the crankshaft....in the center of the oil pan. This allows much more clearance for headers and also centers the weight.
2. Unlike most of the low weight starters, which sound like you are starting a Toyota, this starter sounds "beefy" and proper.
3. The power wire is moved. The "other" IMI starters that we used to use sandwiched the positive post between the oil pan and the starter....so close that we were required to shorten the stud and even grind down the nut to provide even minimal clearance. It was still scary.
4. They are super reliable. I've never had a single issue or had to replace one. I've had terrible problems with the reliability of the rebuilt Bosch starters....to the point where I warn customers that they may not work. At one point in time the reliability on the rebuilt Bosch starters was so bad that I stopped installing them completely and was only installing used original starters.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a fantastic product and I'd like to personally thank Sterling for going to the effort of doing this!
