Spare motor I purchased for rebuild, had a small fire that I traced back to a fuel injector upgrade that didn't include the clips. Only one fuel injector had popped out front left, I assume that it relieved enough pressure or started the fire quickly enough that the others didn't.

I think that is what the popping sound I heard when i had my fire. I didn't have the clips properly seated.

Thanks for posting the source - good warning to people who're using injectors without the correct grooves in!
With the amount of fuel coming out, you did well to limit the damage as much as you did.

Also, keep this in mind when buying aftermarket aluminium extruded fuel rails from vendors that don't even have the ability to instal these clips.

For mine I pushed the rails back on top of the injectors, they were already stuck in the intake. Won't ever do that again. I remember fighting to get the clips in, apparently I botched one.
Not sure what Ted did.

When I did my GT, I first fitted the injectors to the intake before torqing down the intake. I then removed the injectors and fitted then to the fuel rail to make sure the clips where seated, then I installed the injectors with the fuel rail as one unit.

I do this also; it aligns the intake gaskets and prevents anything falling in while completeing the intake install.

FWIW when fitting injectors to the rail and manifold,
I suggest to use Dow Corning 111 on the O rings,
this makes it easy for them to slide into position and will keep the O ring soft.
I fit the injectors to the rail,
then push them into the hole,
then fit the clip,
then give it a tug to seat the injector to the clip/ rail.
Then fit the whole rail to the manifold,
this goes pretty easily with the DC111 on the O rings
