Engine Fire

Ted,
Oh my- that's a bit of a fuster cluck!
On the positive side, studying the photo of the engine bay, the damage may not be as dire as first impressions suggest. Get the debris out of the way and clean everything up and see how it looks. There does not seem to be much damage to the paint of the hood and wings so that suggests you were on it very quickly.
Of course there may be more damage where we cannot see at the moment. Given the paint on the inlet manifold does not appear torched that gives me some hope of moderate damage limitation.
I note some apparent damage on the front spoiler- presumably fire incident derived - if so power steering system leakage/fire?
Either way- feel for you and wishing you a speedy and "good as it gets" outcome.
Rgds

That leads to the question of is there a fuse that we can build into this circuit and why the hell did porsche do something so dumb?

Awful. I hope you can get through the grieving process quickly.
All those black charred bits - was that the hood liner/foam? Makes me think something less combustible would be good there. I'm liking ABS even less right now, too - no fuse?

the damage can be fixed though it will be a total,

Hope you are doing ok with what's happened. There is a huge support community here to help what you needed to get this baby back up again. Once you're settled with the insurance company, get back to making this cat purr again!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am very glad it was in the driveway and not in the garage. Was also lucky my 2015 Edge Sport parked 4 ft away didn't get damaged too!
The fire damage is consists mostly on the front of the engine. It will need the cooling fans, that big wiring harness across the front of motor, front bumper, front plastic belly pan, intake tubes, cross brace (heat actually bent it!), front fuel hoses and damper, fuel rail covers, intake tubes, ignition coils and wires, all front engine sensor wires repaired and/or replaced and that's just my quick visual without really getting in there. I am sure the plastic end tank on the rad took a beating too.
When I popped the hood, I was expecting the fire to be on top of the motor but once I got the plastic bits extinguished I was concentrating my efforts in between the engine and the rad whether it was just the oil buildup on the belly pan burning or what started the initial fire I am not sure.
I am certain it's going to be a total, considering this car was a working project and in need of body, paint, and interior work it's only insured for 8k (pretty close to what I have into it now). My plan was to do body and paint in the winter and the interior the following year. Now with the possibility of having a salvage title it may make the project not worth it.
Lots of things that could be done with it, someone could buy it, fix what's wrong and have a great track car. Would be a good part out car as well. Whatever happens I will be certain to take the car back from insurance.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

See if you can settle so that they don't slap a salvage title on it then you fix it and you keep the car. $1000 in used parts will be plenty to get the engine back where it was.

WOW, must be in the air. Same thing happened to me last month. I was backing my 87 S4 out of the garage to wash it, heard a pop like running over a plastic water bottle. Stopped, scanned the instrument cluster no warning or indication of anything amiss, except the car started running a little rough.
I put it in neutral, hit the throttle for a second and backed up to the hose. It was then I saw smoke exiting the hood.
1. Ignition off
2. pop hood
3. pulled the fire extinguisher from the driver door recess storage area
4. ran to front, trying to get the damn plastic off the fire ex. so I could use it.
5. lifted the hood, threw the damn fire ex. to the side. ( that plastic covering is hard to remove when you are in a hurry in panic mode. Really dumb move not to have removed that hard shipping plastic)
6. Grabbed the hose spent about 30 seconds putting out the fire.
Total elapsed time from start to finish approx. 4 min. ( I did a test using another car and duplicated my actions so as to give an accurate statement to the insurance company. American Collectors Ins.
My fire appeared to originate on the passenger side. My damage was not nearly as extensive as yours Cosmo and I have a pit in my stomach looking at your pics.
As stated earlier, the hidden damage we have found following removal of parts is amazing.
I will post my own pictures later today once I get off work. also all fuel, trans, and ps line had been changed about a year ago. I brought in an expert to do the analysis because I disagreed with the adjuster on the root cause. We prevailed.

Not to derail, but...there's a fire extinguisher that fits in the door storage compartment?? I REALLY need to get one (as this thread shows) but I haven't really liked any of the mounting arrangements I've seen.

IMoOOO, I seriously doubt that $1000.00 will get the engine back. OEM Wiring harness is almost 1000 bucks to replace itself. 1000.00 dollars will not even cover the labor for the engine compartment breakdown.
