1981 cylinder heads are off, first peek inside....UPDATED...
Hi !
Happy Labor Day Weekend ! !
1981 928s euro 5sp LSD CISKJet odometer shows "79 000".....
Cylinder heads came off today. Nuts were loosened from studs in "reverse tightening order"... On both sides the center-most nut seemed significantly looser than the others... no idea if that means anything...
Typical fastener below
Here are images of the PASSENGER side block..
Below next an image of the PASSENGER side cylinder head...
Now, the DRIVER side block is seen below....
And one last image, the DRIVER side cylinder head...
Comments, observations, suggestions, poems, haiku, and sonnets are welcomed.
However,
no Spencerian stanzas, triolets, or refrains will be considered acceptable.
We have to maintain some level of literary standard.

When you run your finger across the black residue, does it come off easily and dry. Or does it feel oily? Was there a breech to the water-oil barrier as evident on the head gasket image? How was the coolant and oil when you drained the block?
Lastly, did the PO apply some gasket sealant to the cam gasket during the last installed? My cam gaskets came off in pieces, but it was not in "strings" as yours, almost like an adhesive.
Thanks for the observations, I'll do the best I can here...
1) The black residue is dry, and has almost a "baked-on" quality.
It does not rub off easily at all.
It feels slightly oily, but has more of a gritty, almost abrasive feel.
2) The coolant from the initial drain prior to removal was bright greenish-yellow and clear. No significant particulates, no frothy property; The oil when drained was quite old appearing, but dark, no foamy or emulsified appearance.
3) Yes, one of the POs has definitely been in here before.
* A cam tower bolt had been replaced by an oversized stud-and-nut arrangement (at the site of the cam tower leak actually)
* The cam tower- cylinder head surface were loaded down with a tarry sealant
* The cam tower bolts all had thread locker ( WSM specifies engine-oil only)
* The cam towers and cylinder heads had been painted a bright red, there were little chips of red paint flakes everywhere lol
now you have it on a bench and out of the car... why not just put a nice new motor in there. 5 liter would be a lot of fun. on. just find an 85 block, re-ring it only and use that.
you would have a ripper! i already did this build and it was simple! went from 250rwhp to 290rwhp with no other changes at all. (and that was Ljet based) CIS euro , would be even more
by going 5 liter , you can orient the pistons to get rid of the nasty offset problem of the one piston type used for both sides (bad). 5 liter pistons can be oriented to take advantage of the proper offset and make the engine balance better and have more power too due to fixing of the non optimal rod piston angles of a one size fits all piston ! (as the all the euro and US two valvers have)
Hi Mark,
That idea is really intriguing...
Do you mind if I please ask a few questions about the swap?
Speaking as a n00b, would the 5 liter block be a "direct swap", or would other mods need to be made to my otherwise-bone-stock euro S? Would the motor mounts be the same? Would the other components bolt on to the block as they currently do on my stock block?
Are 5 liter blocks difficult or expensive to obtain? I simply am completely and totally ignorant about this... but interested nonetheless.

Used 5.0 liter blocks can be had from a good chap in Southern California right around the end of the year when he plays Santa Clause and teases all of us out here with a nasty addiction to HP/torque disease....
So....
I have the heads and cam towers and water bridge
boxed up and ready to go to Haas Machine Shop
in Louisville, KY. My son and I will drop them off this
week.
I spoke with the shop and explained the initial reason
for the engine pull was a leaking cam tower, which after
disassembly does in fact appear to be an ongoing issue
with a prior repair attempt.
They are going to give the heads and towers a full inspection
and pay careful attention to the mating surfaces where the
leak is occurring...
I'll be sure to post further info as they have a chance to
diagnose the patient lol.
If you guys can think of any other info I need to provide
the shop, I'd appreciate some comments....

the blocks are almost identical.. all you need to do is take it apart , without splitting the block, which leaves the crank in place. the only thing you need to do , is flycut the pistons, and orient them which takes advantage of the proper offset angles. (minor stuff). the flycuts would be near 500 bucks to do on all 8 pistons. then, everything bolts right back together just as the other block did. the only thing missing is some supports for the throttle body "U" , but that is easily fabricated, and really not needed. other than that, you have an ideal set up to do it. best cheap, easy power you will ever find on the 928. bump the 4.7 euro to a 5 liter and gain about 40hp
