This thread is awesome. I'm going to have to find the 944 one and follow both. I've always loved the 928, but unfortunately don't really get to see too many of them.
I once pointed a really clean one out to my wife in a parking lot and asked her how old she thought it was. She guessed 2005 and didn't believe me when I told her how old the design really was. Had to whip out wikipedia before she believed me.

Today a guy was staring at the car, parked in front of my house. I was busy with the garden, then he came to me and asked if it was something like a race Version of an amc pacer. He recognized the style of rear quarter Glasses....

Friend with an 80's toyota supra said to me - isn't that the poor mans Porsche?
Me: No - that's what we called the supra in the 80's, the 928 cost almost $200K in Oz back then.
I was taking dad for a drive the other day and past a young kid - he nudged his girlfriend and said - "that's a Lamborghini". (I always wanted a Lambo so looks like I got the best of both worlds).

One of the most humorous moments for me:
I was driving in the Stepson with the windows down and pulled up at a light next to a panhandler/homeless guy at the corner. He says, "Hey, a 928!!! What year is that?" I tell him it's an '84.
This guy is severely grizzled and looks like he hasn't seen a bath in months. He says, "It'd probably look real good if you gave it a bath now and then" The light turned green and he could probably hear me laughing a mile away.

What year VW floorpan did you start with to build it?
I actually had a buddy that would ask this question on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to the Ferrari owners.
If you've ever had a Ferrari in the air and looked at it, there's more truth to this than fiction....they look like kit cars with really beautiful sounding engines.

when I first got my car I made an appointment for a post purchase inspection at the foremost Porsche repair shop in the area. while filling out the required paperwork, I asked if they had worked on a lot of 928's, was told yes, by the owner, and that he had a convertible "over there" (pointing to a 968) in for service. for about 20 seconds we debated about Porsche making 928 convertibles, and he was clearly miffed as to why I quickly got in my car and drove off. still not amused that a 20+year business, specializing in Porsche, could possibly be that ignorant.
