I overheard a VW Golf tuning 'specialist' at our local German car day show earlier this year say to a group of people while standing in front a group of 928s:
" I really hate these things as Porsche went really cheap on them and built them down to a price. They only ever shoved a 2.8 litre six in them.."

the man looked at the car and said:" naah, my bmw 840 is much faster, it's got 6 speed transmission."

My own experience has been rather pathetic. The only people who really know and/or appreciate these cars are those who are enthusiasts or professional techs who understand the model.
When I redid the heads on my first 928, an '87 S4, I was in need of a special vacuum connector that was a four-way and shaped like a "+". Camelback Porsche in Phoenix, where I lived at the time did not have one.
I went all over the valley looking and everywhere I went I was met with Jim-Bob at the parts counter whose first query was always "Make/Model/Year?". I would usually reply with, "Can't you just go in the back in the bins where all the vacuum connectors are and see if you have one that would even closely match up?"
Nope. No effin' way because the limits of their training consisted of a compartmentalized responsibility train that did not allow for them to use anyone with a working brain who sold parts.
To this day I run into "What's it goin' on?" and I am always reluctant to answer. Just yesterday, looking for crush washers for the steering rack hydraulic fittings, Jim-Bob's cousin over at O'Reilly's asked me the same question. "Oh, we don't have no 'Pawrsh' parts here."
By this time in my life, I have grown annoyed with Jim-Bob and his family and simply respond, "Well you DO sell metric air, right...you know for the Japanese and European cars?" Then when they give me the deer-in-the-headlights look, I add, "See, it's bad enough that you're stupid---It's that your ignorant as well."
One day years ago in Gastonia, NC, Cooter (or was it Gomer?) asked me, "Whut kinna motor's innat?---It don't sound like no six-slinder."
"V-8"
"Wut? I thought all them Pawrsh's had six slinders inna back---What'd you do? A conversion?"
"No....it came that way...made that way from the factory."
He was stunned beyond speaking, so it would seem.
And the look on his face gave away that he thought I was yanking his chain. Or--that I had no idea what I was talking about. (people do that these days---really annoying)
However, what all this has done over the past 33 years of owning front engine "Pawrsh's" is confirm to me that the vast majority of Americans are voluntarily ignorant. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing---that is, until they think they can speak with authority on a given subject.
I have greater respect for people who are genuinely curious and ask, rather than tell me about my car. I have no fear, conversely, of replying "I don't know" when asked something I do not know about. As an instructor, the easiest way to spot a bad one is hearing a line of BS that isn't true, acting like it's gospel. So claiming ignorance for me is no problem... I then go look it up or find the answer from one of my peers who knows.
But the "conversion" remark was the classic for me. Didn't have the heart to tell him it was up front, not in the back. But then, Cooter/Gomer have their own way and it's not that they're stupid; It's that they know so much that isn't so.

When I brought the first one home, my neighbor came out and said "It's a poor mans Porsche" I figured he thought it was a 924 but in retrospect, he may have been right.

A few years ago when I had my first 928, first P car I had ever owned and very proud of it. Had a company track day day and took the 928 along as there was a chance to go on the open track. I wanted to have a chance to really open her up.
Great day really enjoyed myself.we all went out for dinner. An invitee outside of the company who is a 'Porsche guy' spent most of the dinner giving me a hard time saying it wasn't a real P car as it wasn't a 911. He'd looked at my car during the day and looked like he'd vomited in his mouth.
He was holding on to that old hate thing about the 928 supposedly replacing the 911, too heavy too complicated and not a sorps car blah blah.
I know him well and there were a couple of drinks had during the evening, but I had to breathe in breathe out as it was a bit much.

I usually act like I agree with the people who have never driven a 928 but have all sorts of critisism about it. But eventually I ask them if they talk from experience after driving and owning the car or from stories they heard from other people. Mostly it is the latter. I end tge discussion with remarks like: "perhaps this car is the best kept secret in autoworld, I advise to drive one and than see if you still think the same".

I went to a driver's education class a couple of years back in Germany. The first reaction from the "kids" with their Golf type "sports cars" was: ehhhhh, it´s an automatic!
None of them had any idea what kind of Porsche mine was . The "show" finally began.... While they were fighting and shifting the course with their inline four cylinders with 1.8 liters, we had a great time together (my GTS and I).
Never really had to push the limit to show them how it can be done WITH both hands on the wheel.
Advantage V8, 32 valves and 5.4 liters
928 the understatement in person
