On average France, Spain, Netherlands and even Denmark and Sweden have better condition motorways than German autobahns. There is just too many cars in German roads for any country to be able to keep up with maintenance. In France trucks do not use expensive toll motorways at all so surface is in much better condition. Without speed limits they would be best roads anywhere in Europe to go fast for long distance. This on average as far as I have found out. There are good and bad motorways sections in every country.

There is no section of the 'ring where, on a public day, any non-purpose-built 928 is going to reach its top speed regardless of those speed limits. On non-public days maybe.
Other than the main straight there are no real straights. The main straight is just over a mile long before a heavy braking zone. But, unless you rent the whole track for a track day you must exit the track roughly mid-way down the straight.
The whole track is roughly 20km. Doing some rough math indicates that a 7 minute lap time is an average speed of about 170 kph or about 106 mph. Those lap times are on a closed track.
Just about any 928 can cruise through a tank of gas at 106 mph on a straight level road or even a big oval like Ehra-Lessien.
The Nordschleife is simply not a place where you are going to 'wind out' a 928 or indeed any car for more than a second or three. Comparing it to Ehra-Lessien is like comparing Lime Rock to Watkins Glen at best.

I made one of those all out runs in a supercharged 928, 200 mph average for 8.4 miles. This was part of a 90 mile run at a 170.6 mph average. Car ran great. This was in Nevada, on highway 318. One of those 2 lane black tops with a 70 mph speed limit. Didn't have to take the car to Germany to do it.
Glad to hear you set a year with the end of summer completion date. Look forward to see the car running.

The problem with the autobahn is the traffic, when someone pulls out into your lane at 60 whilst you are doing 170+ it is scary moment as I found out whilst in the 911. However, there are other places in the world where you can do a sustained run in the 928, I think the best I did was in my shark tuned S4 Auto which was 160 to 170 for 10 minutes before having to come of the throttle for the twisty's. The car burnt a fair amount of oil over a 3 three hour period high speed run.

I have no doubts about your car doing that run. I think that if you try that on I-80 there may be something other than a trophy you will get in your hands from the same Nevada Highway Patrol guys that close the entire 318 so you guys can do your thing on an ORR event.
As before, I think this is a bucket list item in a drama free, fully legal way to do a one lap of Germany in the 928 on many excellent roads without speed limits. Besides, think of all the good beer you miss by not doing it in Europe!!
Why don't you bring the white car on this trip? The Germans might ask you to de clutter the dashboard a little bit, but it has plates and lights, so it should be fine otherwise...
On another note, as we discussed at SITP, summer is a good timeline for my project.!
I look forward to showing the finished car with you as well.

I have done this on both stock and tuned 928's including SC'd S4. Autobahn has a way of finding every weakness in any car. I have driven right behind tuned 951 when it blew up it's engine at 160 mph and spilled oil all over friends 964. It had done dozens of laps of Nurburgring without any problems before that but one long flat out section of A20 was enough to kill it. Luclily only 50 km's from Rostock ferry terminal.
I have also done flat our 152 mph on BMW E36 328 coupe behind friends heavily tuned Dodge Omni Turbo and seen it blow up it's engine at around 160 mph at A1 south of Cologne. It had done dozens and dozens of laps at Ring on several different trips before this happened. Reason ended up being wrongly designed custom intake manifold which lead to one cylinder geting less air than others. This wasn't ever found at the Ring doing several consecutive low 8 minute BTG laps.
Doing long fast drives at autobahn can bring up problems which can't be seen even at the ring. It's said one 20 km lap at Ring is worse for the car than 10x distance at normal roads. Yet some situations autobahns bring up can't be properly replicated even in most extreme race track in the world.
George's example proves SC'd 928 can take long distances at very high speeds but if I remember right even his car did blew up one engine doing it. There simply isn't good place to do practice runs anywhere without possibility of serious problems with the law. For fully legal long high speed running there is only autobahn. That alone is reason to go there from far and wide. Nurburgring etc is just good bonus.

I've imported a few cars to Europe over the years and driven Germany top to bottom every time. Still have a 5L Mustang over there sitting to be used whenever a family member goes for a visit but this passive agressive mentality of Bleu is something I have no interest in dealing with.
