You are new here. Welcome.

I don't know where Walt is, or if he is even still with "us" - but...

Default Continued Clean Up

I finished repairing wiring harnesses this weekend and put a battery on it.

Mileage is 107,000 Km so less than 70k miles, not too bad. Top end has no sign of varnish, it looks brand new.

I also found what I think was the definitive cause of the fire. While going over every inch, I noticed some rubber fuel line on the front fuel line, if you look at my previous post last picture you can just see it. First thing I noticed was that the clamps didn't matched, first sign of cobbled together. On close examination I could see a small horizontal cut in the tubing, and feel a sharp edge.

Opened it up and found this.

For some reason the fuel line had been broken, now there are a bunch of ways to fix it right, but it could also have been fixed correctly, I have had to make fixes like this while waiting for a part, not on a 928, if you sand and bubble flare both sides it's an effective repair, if you leave the knife edge from the broken tubing, not so much.

Somewhat of a relief to be able to pinpoint it, disappointing to see how small mistakes can be so devastating, this engine an improper repair, a spare that I purchased, not putting the fuel injector to rail clips on. In both cases the problem may have been caused by a hired wrench and the owner would never had known because of the history of 928 engine fires.

Been a while, the car is on the road, we did a 600 mile trip to Minot to see Aerosmith at the State Fair as a shake down. next test will be to PEI, next week. As expected after the engine was put together there were lots of little things left, I'm now down to a passenger seat that doesn't move front and back, which can wait for winter.

Here are some pictures of the late stages of the rebuild, as you can see I went with Black and metal.

I did top end refresh, TB,WP with Porken Tensioner, Head Gasket on Left.
New Plugs
New Wires
Distributors
Distributor Caps
Vacuum lines.
Rebuilt MAF
and O2 sensor.

Fuel economy has been going up since putting back on the road. The first 300 miles was a tawdry 16 miles to the gallon at around 60 mph, the second 300 miles was a better 20 mpg at closer to 80 and the mileage continues to climb.

I'll get it on a dyno in the next month or two before I install the S300 chip.

Here are picks of the finished car.

With less than 80,000 miles and what looks to be reasonable care for most of it's life, the interior was in good shape, a serious cleaning and a lot of leatherique brought all of the surfaces back up. Even the drivers bolster looks good.

There were a couple of small cracks in the pod so I recovered it in Leather. While doing that I added a new steering wheel.

I'm looking at a new shifter to complete the updated look.

Great save! When you have a chance PM me; it would be fun to see the car and meet another local 928 person.

As quick as this one went, I've been much slower on the 88 that I'm also working on.

There are now 3 928 owners from Winnipeg on the 2 threads, we'll all get together when I get back.

Good luck with your Euro I look forward to seeing it. Did you get it locally?

Fantastic save and quickly done. Id get rid of the weeding box around the logo on the hood liner. It detracts from the logo. I really like the color combo on the powder coat.

That was a fun read! Great work! The results speak for themselves. I'm really envious of the guys that can do this much work by themselves. Congrats! Must feel great.

The speed of the rebuild was almost necessary, my wifw has a lot more patience then many when it comes to my car addiction. But 4 car projects with 2 928s would have been too much.

For those that don't know the car is also appearing in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-the-89-a.html

What better way to test a build then to put it on the road.

Truth be known I took it on a 500 mile jaunt first, went and saw Aerosmith, the car now sports an Aerosmith key chain.

Over 5,000 km (3000 m) and the car hasn't used or split a drop of oil, so I'm getting to be proud of the build.

Thanks for the kind messages.

Default Higher definition pictures

Around 6,000 miles since the work was done.

Here are some higher definition pictures of the engine, as requested.
