Quote: I'm on the hunt for another 928. I'm focused on an airbag year this time. I know 928's well but not GTS's as well as I know S4's/OB's. I always wanted a GTS and am seriously looking at some right now, but I have a few questions for comparison;

1. Is the body on a GTS only different from an S4 on the rear bumper cover (strip across between the tail lights) and the flared rear quarters/ rounder wheel arches)? Or are the front fenders different too?

87-91 S4 & GT: 928 504 301 02. 92-95 GTS: 928 504 301 03. Fuel door on the GTS has a slight twist to blend with curvature of rear quarters. T

I recently picked up a German language 1991 Exclusive options price list (dated August 1990) - there are a couple of fender-related options-

1). There is X38, wider front fenders, including 8 x 17" wheels on front axle. This is not on the 8/90 Exclusive options sheet, perhaps it came later, as there are 65 ROW and 1 U.S. car that list the option. The earliest of the ROW cars is a German '93 GTS. And the 1 U.S. car is a '95- the Perglanz car.

If there were really that many ROW cars with flared front fenders I'd think we'd have seen a bunch of them (?)

There are 2 rear fender options:

1) XX8, GTS rear fenders- the list price in German DM works out to $8426 US using the 1990 exchange rate. There are 90 ROW and 1 U.S. '91 that list that option- the U.S. car is a '91 GT, WP0AA292XMS810182, which is otherwise unremarkable options-wise. This is the most expensive Exclusive option for a 928 in the price sheet and includes some sort of TUV approval charge. The '418' in the pic is the list of options with which it could not be ordered, the dreaded rub strips.

The '91 GT is discusssed here- XX8 is mentioned as being switch frame in leather but I think it's the GTS rear fenders.

Just to add to the confusion, PET also lists 10 ROW cars with IXC1, Flared rear fenders with increased track. All 10 are 1989 ROW cars, Japanese, German, and Sweden. Not listed in the 8/90 exclusive options price sheet. Too early for GTS fenders, no?

XC1 is earlier fender style. There is possibly more of them than those 10 as Exclusive options are not included in PET data before mid '89 MY.

I believe the 91's and later like mine have a different steering rack. Also, have the roof top antenna.
Didn't the rooftop antenna come along earlier than that?
I know I've seen earlier cars (S4's & GT's) that have them.
(although I've always wondered if they had been added).
Both of my S4's (87 & 88) have the windshield antennas.

Decades ago I looked at a used pre GTS 928 with factory GTS quarters. The seller said he bought the car at the NY auto show and it was a "one off" car to show the upcoming GTS body at the show. I regret not buying that car. It was black or a dark color. Registered in NJ. I'm guessing it was a late '91.

Oh, right! So it was the '93s that were really '92s that had r12 and the 'real' '93s had r134a.

But the pollen filter was still '94.
