Default Rear quater wheel well change to round opening like GTS?

I'm not going to do this but wondering if anyone has. I never liked how the pre GTS 928's have a squared off rear wheel well. I lust over the GTS quarters, who doesn't? But did anyone ever modify their non flared quarters to have the round wheel well like a GTS? Seems it might not be that hard to do.

That is the one design flow in all the bodywork imo. I prefer the OBs over the s4/gt/gts models with all the recessed lights, etc. but it would absolutely look perfect if the rear wheel arches matched the fronts and were rounded instead of square.

I am a 924 fan as well and have thought about fiberglass flares like on the 924 carrera gt except having the seams obviously be well...seamless. I can't imagine a bolt on fix though. But I guess if you can do body work it wouldn't be too difficult. I can't wait for any experts to chime in.

This is my 87, is this what you are talking about?
If it is, you are not correct about it might not be hard to do, it involves cutting fenders off and welding new GTS ones on.

Not quite. Nice conversion BTW. I mean that pre GTS quarters have a sort of square rear wheel arch. The GTS's have a round arch. Flare is a separate issue. I never understood why Porsche made the rear arch sort of square. Round arch's like the fender arch's would be much nicer. My question is, has anyone rounded the rear arch on pre GTS's without the extra body work of flaring the quarters.

On the same note, has anyone ever but GTS flares on an OB? Again, I'm not going to do this? Just curious.

I think there's some confusion here.

The GTS does not have rounded wheel arches in the rear - the ones on Greg's (Blown87) car are GTS rear quarters he had fitted to his 87 S4 using factory parts.

There were some Exclusive Department rear wheel arches with a round profile that follows the tire, and I suspect those are what you mean. They protrude slightly wider than stock S4 arches.

However they're very rare, and usually fitted by factory on highly optioned S4's. There's a thread about unusual option codes which includes some pictures of them.

Malibu did a lot of creative things with his 928's.

He rounded off his rear fenders:

If you'd make yours round, you'd quickly realize what geniuses the designers of the 928 really were. There are as many reasons why the wheel arches on the 928 are not round as there are previous threads where we discussed it.

I don't think I would make this mod to one of my cars, but I'd be interested to see someone pull this off. I'm not a fan of the squared off wheel wells, particularly the rear. To me, it looks awkward and is one of the design elements that dates the look of the car.

The factory pulled it off.. or at least attempted to. Option code XC1 "Rear fender extension".

This car in Belgium (89 S4):

and from Brian Long's book (scanned by Erkka)

and this car in the Netherlands:

Wow, you learn something new every day. I never saw those wheel arches before. However I'm not a fan of those extensions/flares.I like the GTS's more angled flares much better IMHO. Still, I was wondering if anyone rounded the wheel arches without flaring them too.

Nicole, can you tell me why Porsche didn't do round? I searched but didn't find much on this. There's alot on GTS flares but not round arches.

Thanks,
David

Found a thread on wheel arches. Seems the design is based on opinion not any geometry, etc. I prefer round.

Also still seems that the consensus is GTS arches ARE round'ish. Perhaps perfectly round is too round but I do like the rounder GTS arches a lot.

Still seems no one ever rounded rear arches without flaring them too. I'm curious about what rounded would look like without flaring. Anyone?
