Rob,
The polyester on the rootwood can be removed. When i bought the '94, the rootwood was in excellent condition, but it was light colored like maple, and I preferred a cherry or rosewood color. So, I attacked the polyester with paint remover. Used a LOT of it, with many coats and careful scraping. I finally got 98% of it removed, then did wet sanding (yes it IS a veneer, so it has to be carefully done). When i was sure all the polyester was gone, I lightly bleached it, then stained it to my taste. I finished it with about 8 coats of spar urethane glossy spray, then about 3 or so of semi-gloss with light wet/dry sanding between coats.
You might also check with Jim Mayzurk. He's been restoring a fairly poor condition set of Rootwood for Roger Tyson to put in his '93 GTS. I'm not totally aware of his procedure, but I'm sure it's going to come out well done!!!

Gary-
Thanks for the details on the refinishing- I was going to try to be as conservative on refinishing the wood, but I took apart the center console piece last night to have a look, and the polyester is really starting to cloud:
I want to match the original color, I think the dark stain looks right with the light gray parts of the interior.
I put the car back together last night but the insert is easy enough to remove with the console in place, so at some point when I get my courage up I'm going to try the heat approach to see whether I can soften the polyester and then scrape with an oak scraper (use nothing harder than the wood being scraped.....) I have a polyester resin kit on the way from Allied Piano, and a 'practice' piece of console from a W126 mercedes to potentially mess up before I get to the 928 pieces.

Three Wheelin'
You might want to contact a specialist that does automotive wood restoration & see what it would cost to have them do it. Won't be cheap, but should come out nice.
No recommendation as to who, but here is an example of what can be done.

Rob,
Where did you get the connectors for the amp as seen in picture 6 post 380? Are they readily available?
Also, in picture #1 post 380, the wire that has the spring loaded blue button that goes through the steering wheel: does it just press in from the airbag side or is it threaded through from the dash/pod side?
Thanks,

Same stuff that I inherited? Maybe that wears down or something. I have some blast cabinet maintenance to do obviously.

The last time I looked at this thread was when Mark bought this GT.
And even though I heard you were restoring it, it didn't occur to look here.
So I just spent a very enjoyable couple hours catching up.
And all I can say is WOW! ...what a transformation!
Rob, you do excellent work my friend.
I'll be following along more closely now. Subscribed for the second time.
PS. I love to do (and read) these type of documentation. Haven't had time lately to do so. You've inspired me, so now I just need to figure which 928 to resto-document.

Hi John-
The 2pin DIN connectors were still attached to one of the 6 channel amps on the shelf at 928Intl- it was the only one that had those, so I took them. Generic 2-pin male DIN connectors are available , typically on the UK Ebay site- they come either with bare pins to solder to (total PITA) or with small screw terminals- deg
These:

or these:

RE: the spring loaded ground thingee on the wheel- I honestly have no idea, it was present on the spare wheel I got from Mark, so I didn't mess with it.

Tom, if you're keeping the stock wiring to the speakers another option would be these female DIN-to-pigtail adapters:
