Thanks Sean, those pics are an excellent example of the OE clamp migration. This effect is not unique to our (yours and mine) cars only, and this makes the case.

Thrust bearing failures are not uncommon in the 928, symptoms include engine stalls at low RPM's, hard, dragging starts at warm engine temps.
The consensus here is a defect in the OE flex plate clamp, pics of big turbine engines are not applicable in this situation.

Well, we threw together a "Shark Attack at the Kansas City Automotive Museum" back on December 20th with a grand total of 4 days planning. We had 9 sharks show up. So, a good chance all 4 of us were at the museum that day. Did you feel your ears burning? We were probably talking about you at some point!

One other thing, can you also send me a new cap for my coolant expansion tank? I think my current one needs to be replaced, according to sh944. My car will overheat about every other time I drive it, and it blew off a radiator hose that day of the Shark Attack when we were driving out to sh944's garage condo. We reattached the hose, filled with coolant and pressure checked the system. Other than tightening up a couple of hose clamps everything was fine. But, sh944 tested the coolant reservoir cap and said it could stand a new one. I hope that cures the overheating problem. I replaced the thermostat and inner thermostat seal after the car overheated when I finished my TB/WP change. About half the time it overheats and half the time it doesn't.

I got my Ritech last year from Roger and just finished installing this gold beauty. BTW, did my Flexplate plate last year and when I checked this evening it hadn't moved from my previous marks. Rear pinch bolt good.

Installed mit Ritech clamp in Sep. 2017, it has not moved since. Before the clamp, the flexplate was secured with Loctite 270 to the shaft. NO movement either.

Bought the car in 2003 and TB play has always been 0.25 mm.

Does migration happen on GT & GTS' models?

Not on the GT- it is a manual transmission. The problem happens on S4/GTS variants with auto tranny and possibly some of the pre-S4's as well. The original clamp/shim arrangement was no problem but that changed some time around 1984 to the later clamp. I am not aware of problems happening to pre-S4 models but then I do not pay much attention to pre-S4 model posts as I know little about them.

Thanks for the education...Fred. I didn't know GTs were all manuals. I'm glad I did my Flexplate last year and seeing there was no migration. I feel better the Ritech clamp as been installed.

The Ritech clamp's main feature is the ease of installation. Cheap insurance considering the ramifications of TBF.

Most owners have not experienced such - my PO lost a shed load of money after the original GTS motor TBF'd. Not only was the crank ruined, the casing was shot with cracks in the crankcase webbing. I dare say some clever chappie somewhere might have been able to save the original motor but no one around my part of the planet I could trust to do the work never mind the cost. I made the PO a reasonable offer given I had my S4 motor, he said he would think about it- I advised him to think about it for as long as he wanted on the proviso that my offer would drop in price by $2k per day- he made a smart choice!
