Question about traveling I 95 through NYC
I'm headed to Johns Island SC this weekend from Norwich CT. I have driven through NYC a few times but never in a car as low as my 928(with no belly pans). I know the roads are pretty crappy. Does anyone frequent I 95 through NYC and down to DC. Taking I 95 saves considerable time but not sure the risk vs. benefit is worth it. Any input on road conditions would be appreciated. Planning to travel through NYC in the very early hours of the morning.

NYC itself (Cross Bronx) would be a bad idea. Way, way too many potholes. And not little ones either.
Rest of it, NJ turnpike, through Delaware & Maryland isn't too bad.
There are some bumps and holes, you just have to pay attention.

Enjoy. Gales Ferry CT here. From NC originally, so quite familiar with 95. If you leave at around 4 you'll miss most of the cross Bronx traffic. You can just take the Tap instead? When my wife had her lung transplant at NY Presbyterian (upper Manhattan) we would often follow the Merritt Parkway to the Hutchinson Pkwy. It drops you out right at the GW. That's another nice option. I would personally not drive a Porsche over the cross Bronx, but I always used to see 911's there. Too many nasty bumps.

Ride height is critical to bottoming out on things. On my 89, the belly pans were long gone, the front air dam gone, the Alternator scraped on speed bumps. The ride height was way low from never checking and adjusting it. It is the first thing I did to avoid any further damage. We should get together later this summer and compare notes.

Carlos,
When going through Delaware, the I 495 branch around Wilmington is closed, so you will stay on I 95. Traffic may be VERY heavy, as there are only 2 or 3 lanes (some construction on I-95 also, I understand), where all traffic must now travel, vs 6 lanes when 495 was open.
Have a great and safe trip.

I typically take the Tappen Zee/287 and go around. If I have to do NYC then go down the merritt, pick up the cross bronx which will take you west to the saw mill. Then the saw mill south along the hudson to the GWB. Not too bad and the saw mill is pretty good.

Just avoid the Cross Bronx. In any car. Any time. Ever.
Also use Waze-it will tell you where there's construction.
You could take an inland route but it will be just as crowded and 2 lanes (I 81), then you'd have to swing out to the coast...

Tony is spot on. I just looked at an actual map to see where you are going.
Get to Hartford, take 84 to Scranton, 81 south to 77 in VA, then down through North & South Carolina. You have a ton of options through NC & SC.
It adds a few miles, but you completely avoid NYC, Philly, Baltimore, DC & Richmond.
You also trade some of the worst scenery in the east for some of the best. 81 through PA, WV, MD & VA is gorgeous. The NJ turnpike...
Not so much.
