Track car exhaust ideas
Starting with DEVEK L2 headers, into a Y and out to a 3" single. I was thinking of running two Borla XR 1's in line, and then out a resonator tip. This is for a stock 5L. I want it pretty quiet, like 90db quiet, would this set up get me there?

I am in the process of redoing my exhaust , it is dual 3 inch and I went to the Burns Stainless web site . after supplying the with loads of info on the car I think they will be able to recom exhaust configuration to meet your needs....
Hope this helps.

Came across this comprehensive test in a Mustang magazine.

Looks like the Borla XS is a good starting point.
The Burns mufflers are cool in that they are rebuildable, but the diameter looks pretty big? Maybe used as a rear muffler only?

dont go 3", too restrictive. go 3.5" from the Y pipe, after all, all 8 are venting through it.
next, i sometimes use a borla inline muffler around the rear transmission and my standard borla final resonator. this hits 94db and all i need is an angle pipe to get to 92dB on those track days. one more muffler maybe near the Y pipe would make 90db for sure an allow it to sound great too.
so, recomendation..... 3 mufflers, including the end resonator /can and you are good.

I had (have) a 3.5 inch single /no cat / headers /Y and two borla xr1 mufflers on my 5.8 L stroker . The sound was reasonable for a street car . With only one it sounded like nascar.

Thanks for the input, looks like two in line mufflers and the resonator end tip is the way to go. With the stock 5L, I'm going to stick with the 3" single. I've got no problem going larger if it turns out I'm choking off performance, but in my own limited experience, I've had good luck being conservative in exhaust pipe sizing.

all casper has is msds headers to a Y pipe into a single 3.5" then just one borla shorty....it dumps just behind the rear crossmember.....I have never ever failed sound, granted Thunderhill is 103db....its pretty loud in the car, but quiet outside.....clearly makes great power from my tiny 4.5L...one problem area the MSDS headers has is the gasket....I had constant leaks at the merge until I got a thick lead-ish gasket and lock washers to hold it together

Let me know what you figure out and we'll double the order...have to finish up my exhaust too....may just sell that X I got with the headers..and go with the single "Y" and double mufflers....

I'm at the same crossroads with my Euro S. MSDS headers into a y pipe and 3.5 inch pipe. Where are you sourcing the y pipe? Abby Normal's race car that just sold has a nice system and a really sweet y pipe.

This is what I'm looking at so far. I picked up a stainless magnaflow 10798 off eBay for $49.
I've got an inquiry to the seller on eBay on what this rear muffler is, whether it's packed or a resonator, and if it's a straight through design. It's stainless and runs $55.
If it's straight through I'll run it with 2 borla's, if it's not I'll start with a single.

The Y will be built off the magna flow junction. It's a 3" in ( to accommodate the DEVEK collector ) and a 3" out. The headers are on the large side for the motor IMO. I think a 3.5" single exhaust seems big for 5L. No science behind that statement, and the 3.5" exhaust seems to working well for those who run it, but I'd like to see what the single 3 does
(unless someone has some empirical evidence that this is a disaster waiting to happen).

I wonder if there is a benefit to doing it like this so the merge is occurring near the same point X pipes merge.
