Ive looked at GC fans also, but not sure if anyone has ran those or if anyone knows if the mounting holes are the same as the SPALs and would mount in Hans Shroud.

I am working on a new fan solution that uses a brushless motor with an internal controller. It would be a bespoke model for my application, and getting close to having a sample unit for testing.

The motors in the slim Spal fans seem to be pretty picky about some of the stock output stages. The large format motors dont seem to care, I have one set on a car for over 7 years and they are still kicking.

GC offers a directly compatible sized fan frame, and they have a higher output motor pacakge dubbed BMF. Back in 2018, I requested they marry the two together, and they gave the fan a part number of 90050533. I dont think the fans were ever built. The reason it stalled out was they were developing their own PWM controller that would stack on the back of the fan motor (pretty clever) but when the product finally came out, it did not have the current capacity to drive two fans. Instead, there was a relay for a secondary output, but in a common manifolded shroud, this was not a usable option. The parent company in Italy was supposed to be developing a higher capacity model, but to the best of my understanding, that is not yet available.

That is when I changed gears to use the Derale controller as an option for cars that need it.

Ultimately, I think the brushless solution will be pretty nice. It has a 3-wire connection with a dedicated PWM input pin to control speed. The plan is to to just bypass the stock output stage, but retain the control module. We will see if it works directly, or if I need to make a small board to "translate" the stock output to a higher frequency and acceptable duty cycle.

I will post an update when I get the new fan samples in.

.

part number for those "large format motors"...??

Hans - any update on the brushless fans and controller? As we discussed previously when you are ready I'd be in for a shroud, fans & controller. No great hurry - can wait till you are done.

Might be a long shot, but is there anyone that had one of these fan shrouds laying in their garage, that never installed it and are willing to sell?

Good luck with that. If anyone admits to having one and leaves it lying around they will be shunned from the community. Time for a good old fashioned stoning...

Thanks, I think you made it even easier to find one now

If wonders would happen and there is someone out there willing to sell, they could send me a PM and avoid the stoning.

They work but I realized after installing another big SPAL in another car that the SPAL fans make a rattling noise like bad bearings when the stock fan box runs them at reduced speed, at run-on especially. I am guessing it has something to do with the frequency of the PWM. (Maybe needs a capacitor added?)

mine are activated by the provided temp sensor. On or off…no variable speed..

Interesting that you mentioned this. Mine seemed noisy at run on so I had the bearings replaced locally but was not happy with the result. In the end I found a couple of fans at my friendly AC store who had a pile of SPAL fans in their shop two of which had the same motor fitted so I got a good deal on them. When I tested the original motors with a battery they seemed to run just fine so maybe there is something in what you say- SPAL offer their own PWM controller and wondered about dropping the stock fan controller unit altogether, running one fan full speed and the other on modulating control. I also have another issue in that the ac sender that provides a signal to the controller has taken a dump- maybe better to just run the fans flat out and be done with it especially in a hot climate like ours.

In the stock set-up both fans will run on high with one plug disconnected at the silver flap controller on the passenger door side.

what is the part number for the latest spal or aftermarket fan that is a direct fit into the factory shroud?
is the plug the only modification?
