Default Trans Rebuild Started UPDATE Assembly Started

Finally got to take it completely apart. Here are some pics, all the parts are bagged and tagged, hopefully it will go back together and work.

The B2 band was worn mostly on the outer parts of the band, I measured the thickness of the band, thickness averaged around 3.2mm and the new band is 4.75mm. Surprisingly the inside part of the band isn't quite as worn (around 4.1mm) as the outer parts, and definitely the outer part of the band did not show even wear all the way around. The B2 drum is on the far right shows some heat discoloration.

Thursday I'm taking the K1 and K2 drum to my buddy's shop to strip down and replace all the frictions, he has the presses. Take a look at the pictures, not sure what Steve did here in replacing the hidden O-Ring

Here is K1 drum, looks like he only put 2 screws in when replacing the "hidden O-ring", and didn't use original rivet holes???

Here is K2 drum, looks like he replaced the the hidden O rings and used original rivet holes to bolt together.

The spring clip below for the B3 plates and frictions was not installed, not sure if Steve left it out. Any idea if it is needed (Greg Brown????)

Still have to take the valve body apart to clean it out, as there is some black residue in the ATF, probably B2 band material.

Hope to get it back together over the weekend and back into the car in the next week or so.

+1.
Get this beautiful car back on the road soon Glen.
But take all the time it needs to get this trans to the "like new condition".

You know you are tempting the black magic vodoo kings by playing inside an auto trans?

Jeff, taking the veil off the mystery of an auto trans, so far no magic yet, car won't move anyway, worst case it get's a new trans or a 5 speed swap.

Glen, I have done it twice now. It is not as bad as it seems. There is alot of info on Rennlist from borland that helps. It has been quite a while since I did mine, so I probably won't be able to help too much. The WSM is excellent for rebuilding the transmission. It is very detailed and step by step. I am sure you have them. I have my nephew's auto trans to rebuild in the near future as well. Good luck!

Thanks Mike, it doesn't seem too bad so far. Rennlist is a big help. I have the manuals and a Automatic Transmission Service Group manual.

Couple observations already, the B2 band is definitely worn.

The finger spring piece in the body trans for the B3 frictions and plates was not in there, don't know if Steve left it out or not. What does it do and should I get one to put in?

I checked the play in the K1 and K2 clutches, both are around 1.88-1.90mm, spec is between 0.7-1.2mm. the frictions plates are around 2.12mm each and not much different from the new friction plate thickness.

Anyone have any idea what is consequence of having too much play in clutch pack?

I'll get them in spec by getting thicker metals or thicker circlip.

Well, I admire you for doing this....it is certainly the most difficult thing I do, in my own shop. There's so many different pieces that "need" attention, so much stuff that gets updated, and so many little dimensions to check....they are mind numbing.

Wow you are brave! A C4 auto is bad enough, I wouldn't even try to tackle this one. Can't go wrong with shipping it to Greg, very fair prices and great work! He did my '82 5 speed and it is smooth as silk now, should be good for another 100K easy.

Default Progress, Now Waiting for Parts

Made progress yesterday rebuilding the K1 and K2 clutch packs and replacing the hidden O-Rings in them. K1 rebuild went great, clearance within spec. K2 rebuild, I need thicker plate and or thicker circlip to get clearance within spec. Parts are coming from Germany Also need a thrust washer that is the first part to back into casing that is not in stock either.

I'll start rebuilding valve body while waiting on these pieces.
