Sorry, with similar quality drivers....stock to stock.....embarrass is the correct word.

And even more embarrassed when the 928 engine blows up.

25 years of evolution and technology is too tough to overcome....stock to stock. And the 928 was never designed to be a track car. The 997 evolved from race cars.

Now if you give me a 928 to modify, with what a 997 costs, it will be a completely different story.....

Certainly not intended that way.

I think you should be proud that you were doing that well against a 997....you were certainly outdriving him.

No one is ever going to be happy about blowing up an engine....however, you are certainly not the first one to do this in a 928....and certainly not the last.

Sad that so many 928 engines have blown up in these situations. Fortunately, so preventable now.....but not back then.

Actually, Porsche should be the ones that are embarrassed. Straight forward to fix....and yet they tried so many times, without success.

Two Porsche engineers discussing engine projects:

Engineer 1:

"The boss wants us to do two engine projects....one for a boat and one for an airplane."

Engineer 2:

"The boat will need lots of torque...how about the 928 engine?"

Engineer 1:

"But it will pack 5 quarts of oil into the heads at higher rpms and the oil will be forced into the intake system, reducing the effective octane of the fuel and cause detonation.....pounding out the rod bearings. Eventually, the heads will fill with 5 quarts of oil and there will not be enough oil left to feed the bearings. We know this, from running the 928 engines on the dyno!"

Engineer 2:

"Vent the crankcase somewhere else than the intake system. Install a giant oil pan with increased capacity, so that it can't run out of oil.....work fine in a boat.

Maybe we better use the 911 engine for the airplane project!"

With the 2 cars I'm currently considering as replacements, a 928 and an e39 M5, I'm probably looking in the $15-18k range. That should give me a nice example of either car. I looked at an M5 this past weekend listed for $20.9k and it's a $17k maybe. Needs more cosmetics than the owner is willing to admit and the mileage puts it in the $18k range.

Check out Greg's 89GT for sale... the 89 GT offers a different driving experience from all other 928's.. Worth a look imho....

RSA,

I have a few 928's on the market, but they are either well below or well above your price point... EURO85 at $14k and '94 GTS at $40k or BLU82 if you want a car you can't really justify driving at $55k! ;-)

The 928 is a luxury gt, but the platform is great, so it can do very well. 997 time is 8:05.
