Yep, that's some of us. We usually have 10-20 928's show up for food/coffee the first Saturday of the month. The location has been varied the past year due to our regular joint closing down. I got an e-mail yesterday asking me to pick a place this time so I'll be kind to the Plano/Dallas crew and go North Central The date is going to be Aug 3rd at 8:30 or so. I'll get a location figured out sometime soon so we can get the e-mail blasted out and I'll let ya know. You can show up in a Dodge Caravan for all we care, it's about the people.

Also, if I come across a good 5 speed I'll let ya know. Several really good Autos for sale at the moment too.

You must be willing to travel for the right car. 928s are rare and 5-speed cars are even more rare, but they are out there if you are patient.

I found mine on eBay, but I was checking Autotrader, Craig's List and Rennlist classifieds. More cars pop up here on the forum than in the classifieds. It took me over a year to find the right car, but I was in no rush. In the end I found a better car than I thought I could afford at a price that was lower than my budget allowed and was only 3 hours from home.
good info. thanks.

i'm not new to buying cars out of my area. i have bought cars from san fran (twice), san diego, colorado, indiana, new jersey, west virginia and that was mostly while i lived on the east coast. my RSA came from colorado, my e36 LTW came from san fran, my 997S came fron san diego - so no issue looking out of the area and am willing to do that for the 'right' 5 speed 928. my '78 euro 928 was a 5 speed and i only want another one if it's a 5 speed also. my current car isn't ready for sale yet, but it could be very easily. i will be in the position of having to take a solid offer on my car whether i already have a replacement or not.

For wheel options check Wheel Enhancement and select 928 to filter the option to only wheels that will fit. They have pics of the wheels so you can see what they look like on a car.

The most common exhaust mod is a rear muffler bypass (RMB.) It eliminates the rear muffler. Headers are a big project to install and a big expense, but offer nice power gains. An x-pipe is also a nice bump in power, but eliminates the cats so not good for States with inspections or smog tests. A full high flow exhaust with high flow cats is another option, but $$$.

i assume lighter weight chassis and more potential for performance upgrades? if so, please give me a quick rundown of the advantages.

to be honest, i don't need crazy power (but i do like it). right now, one of the disappointing things about my commute in North Dallas is that I can only drive the 997 at like 4/10s. when i really get into it, i'm at illegal speeds in a flash (and traffic rarely allows this to begin with). it's an incredibly capable car and i have it just where i want it mods wise - which is also where the boredom comes in. no more upgrades to really do and that makes the car less fun. time to more on.

btw, for a bit of background, i have years of autox and track experience, driving instructor for several clubs and tracks and raced in SCCA. didn't want my 'illegal speed' comment to be taken the wrong way. ;-)

Seat is a Kiddy Infinity Pro. Very lightweight. Although the kids dont like the safety feature on their lap, so I now leave that out and it is a normal seat.
If I now pick up the kids (now 3 and 5) from day care, I let them sit in the normal porsche rear seats. They like it as it feels like a seat made for them. And they look up to the sky instead of to the side...

Maybe. Definitely nice to read from a credible source! :-)

There is definitely a STARK difference in how different model years -- and even different cars drive. My '83 Euro 5 spd is way different than my '85 5 spd was, and they are both distinct from my 86.5 auto.

At risk of overgeneralizing..and based on anectdotal info and personal experience, there is a fairly vast difference in the driving characteristics of a car that is just dusted off and/or maintained at the 85% level, versus one that is fully squared away. Keeping a DD at the n'th stage requires some dilligence, for sure. I'm still aspirational on that point- but close.

Principle bonus with the 86.5 is that is has the '87 and up S4 suspension and brakes. Yes, lighter than an S4, but not than earlier models. There are other differences, but I'd say that is the most compelling one.

Euro cars tend to have more favorable gearing for tossing around- but also tend to have -- at least in my experience with '83 a reliance on cam profile rather than displacement meaning the power comes on assertively at a higher rpm range. Except for TV's car (which is a later model). :-)

Remember in the earlier years these cars were still built when Porsche was bragging about hand-made craftsmanship and eschewing mass production and assembly lines. Quality sometimes reflects that in the older cars- but the 'patina' of age on 928s is often harsher and less tempered than on some of the models more favored in the Porsche mainstream.

TV and Lizards recommendations are good. '89 S4 and GT have some percs. Later GTS are cozier- also heavier. Depending on resources and objectives, likely extent of fawning and/or upgrades is good to factor into the initial purchase.

It will take alot to bring a 928 to run with a 997. I like my 928 because I love working the limit of my 16 inch wheels in turns and on acceleration. Feels good when I bury the Subaru boys who have an engineering advantage.

There is always going to be someone with a faster car. For me, it's about the feel of the car, around town, down the highway, and at the limits on the track. It doesn't hurt to always get "Wow, nice car" complements almost everywhere I go. Or have people pull up beside me, roll down their window, honk and give me a big thumbs up. Didn't happen in my 944 Turbos, a few times in the boxsters, but ALL THE TIME in the 928.

My advice would be to go hang with the Dallas group and see if you can drive some of the different years to see if you really like one. Got my GTS from Willhoit Enterprises in Springfield MO. He runs into and sells some nice 928s.

Don't know how that came about but it's been like that for almost a decade.
