California CARB-approved Cat Confusion
#16
I cant even find anything pre1996 on their website, I must be looking in the wrong section (looking on Aftermarket lookup)
The thing is that it isn't really aftermarket, it is getting it from Porsche themselves. Porsche cats will not be in the aftermarket list

Buying or selling used cats is illegal in Cali.
Using used is illegal if it dosent have the correct stamp (ie no pass). OEM is exempt from that rule.
That being said, all those rules are for aftermarket. Maybe hit up your smog place and see what is their opinion on getting an OEM porsche cat that is from another model being yours is not made anymore. They are the ones passing you or not (ie visual)

Yeah, the CARB website database baffled me too. Magnaflow & Walker are clear, easy to use, excepting the single exhaust boo-boo with Magnaflow. Anyway, I tend to agree that these aftermarket cats are probably not going to hold-up all that long, but it would be nice to have the option. I installed a relatively inexpensive aftermarket cat on my old Durango and it took the awful numbers down to zero. Then I sold the Durango. I don't plan to sell the 928. I've seen 928s older than mine, but with far fewer miles, not necessarily maintained as well as mine, still get VERY clean results. With the high O2 and HC as well as NO, I probably have some tuning issue, but it's not obvious to me what it is. The numbers are consistent with a lean miss.
This isn't directed at you, Bill, just posting for those that do not realize the police state we live in here in the people's republik.

I'm laughing here, because these stratagems are as if we are talking about underage girls, or guns, or liquor in a dry state. But cats???
I really had no idea it was this hard. I won't talk about my own exhaust because I still had my innocence back then. But now I wonder about the guy I know with an early '80's cat that wants to sell to me. Does HE know we are talking about contraband now? I do....
