You must have missed my thread four years ago where some smug Prius driver choked on his organic pigeon **** shake and reported the smoke out my tailpipe to the Bay Area Air Quality Management.

Bill - I know you said you didn't want to move to Arizona - but things are much more relaxed here - you have to pass emissions sniffer test - but they really don't care much how you do it. They don't even look to see if you have any cats - just do the test.

They also just look at the gas cap - scratch their head - and write "pass by visual inspection"

Come on over! (not really the best time of year to arrive though...)

We do of course instead have annual stringent testing for the AC System and the Cooling system and the penalties for failing are very severe.

Bill- I have been able to really lower the NOX on
an old Lincoln by removing the egr valve & cleaning it and the passages that were coked up. Some Hondas had manifolds that would also coke up resulting in very high nox- the fix was either a new manifold or drill, clean & plug the drilled holes, so it looks like open passages on the egr circuit are important. Might be worth looking at.
Are they sending you to a "star" test station or?
I've had the best luck with the cheapest stations-
they don't seem to take very much time looking things over. Good Luck!
Might be some ideas here-

I don't understand the whole concept behind "STAR" stations. Is this some new rule to further enforce emissions on pre-OBDII cars?

"STAR" stations in California-

http://www.smogtips.com/star-smog-ch...on-program.cfm

What it really comes down to is they are doing their best to force all the older cars off the road.
The air resources board & related agencies have
their political agenda & don't care what we want.

Someone said the star stations are also getting deeper into the car and looking for "tuner" cars with changes to the ECU.

We have no plug for them to get into, so it won't matter as much, other than physical changes to the mechanical systems.

I'd like to see them try to figure out an LH ECU without a SharkTuner.
