Stan,

Just found this from you in Oct...
"NOTE it is wise to remove the old piston from the MC and compare it to the new piston in the new MC
as the MFG somehow made the new MC parts to have less stroke thus the clutch wont release fully,
the culprit is the longer piston in the new MC if the you do swap the pistons over use the old spring as well it is shorter and shouldn't go into coil bind if you use the new spring then cut off 2 coils"

In my case, the new piston is slightly longer, but the spring is about a 1/2" shorter. The seals look to be in the same positions relative to the rod side of the piston. The shape of the piston between the seals is a bit different, maybe less volume for fluid. Not sure the difference in spring length will make much difference since the coils are farther apart on the new shorter spring.

Also, the bore of the old MC feels perfect, no pitting.

Decided to go with the new piston and spring since it all looked about the same layout. I was worried about damaging the seals moving them over too.

I put it all back together, installed the slave, and bled the clutch. I just went for a drive, WOW, now I get it... 5 speeds are very cool! Video to come.

Just took the car out on the highway. It felt pretty good. I forgot how nice stock tires ride, but maybe just low on air. Cruise works, speedo and dash lights don't. Plenty to do, but tomorrow morning is the local PCA gathering at the StarBucks near by, so will get to show it off in the morning.

Here's a video of the 2nd test drive today.

Reading this thread makes me somewhat regret not picking up an excellent condition 5-speed 1990 GT two summers ago.

One of the reason was the gear shift pattern with 1st gear left and back, my daily driver is a 6-speed with 1st gear left and forward, I wasn't sure how well would I be able to go back and forth between the two cars on regular basis.

Will be reading this thread with great enjoyment.

Dan,

Good point. I've been focused on getting it drivable but now need to shift to high priority maintenance like the fuel lines. I'll put a fire extinguisher in the car tomorrow.

No problem what so ever. It becomes a reflex when you sit in the 928. Sort or like switching between english and a foreign language, it becmes second nature. Don't let that stop you from buying one.

Factory tech bulletin says after factory tests they were not necessary and were removed from January 14, 1987, manual engine number #81H00677. So only first half of 87MY got them.
Thanks Matt & Hilton,

I will check the engine number of my new 928 when I will get it. Too many snow into the Alps at the moment...

After a 1989 CS, I have decided only a Lightweight 1987 S4 could replace it
By Lightweight, I mean a no option manual car.

I have similar.. my current '87 has very few options - it was 1480kg on the scales when I had to get it weighed after import (with some fuel in it - I drove it there).

058 Bumpers with impact absorbers
302 Type designated on rear end
330 Radio Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46, All models, not for USA
454 Automatic speed control
513 Lumbar support - right seat
513 Driver's Seat Lumbar Support
538 Right seat with positrol and lumbar

For reference, my previous 87 that had sunroof, 8-speaker radio with amplifier, and LSD weighed in at 1540kg on the same scales.

I miss LSD - but my '89 has it, and for daily-driver purposes, I can live without it in the 87.

Don: I met you this weekend at the PCA get together at Starbucks. I live near you and may be interested in your 89 if you are looking to sell. Let me know (email is drcoe@stagecoachdental.com)

There is no HP gain from an RMB.

True that, it's marginal at best
But
Weight savings..
Sounds more aggressive..

Ever picked up a rear muffler vs an RMB, there's a noticeable difference.

I'm assuming its got big resonators since its an 87, so should not be too annoying w the RMB.

Actually, here in Texas Don won't need cats either. All the way up to model year 88 are now exempt!
