Well I've had a very interesting afternoon, so had to share...
I'm working on the brakes on my daughter's Mustang, so I have both 928's out of the garage, lined up nicely in front of the house. I'm sitting at my computer, looking out the front window of the house, and I see a black Mercedes slow to a stop and backup. I figure he's either looking at the 928's or trying to dodge the neighbor's weiner dogs that are out again. Next thing I know he's driving down the driveway in his new AMG SLK 55, so I headed outside to talk to him.
He shakes my hand and says we have a common interest. He says he has an S4 5spd that's been sitting in his warehouse for about 6 years and he's ready to sell it if I'm interested. It sounds decent and the warehouse isn't very far away so we go look at it.
I was blown away by how nice it turned out to be. Beautiful original red paint, black interior with no dash or pod cracks, leather in great condition, and everything else original. No rub strips, no rear AC! The seats have some extra switches, maybe lumbar and heat? Engine has not been refreshed and has flaking intake paint. He says it runs great but the slave cylinder is out, and the shifter has bushing issues, so it can't be driven. He didn't have the key with him, so I couldn't hear it run.
He had over $5k work done on it 6 or 7 years ago by Hanns, a well know local Porsche dealership mechanic who also works on Porsches out of his house.
So now I'm wondering what I can buy this car for... you have to start somewhere, so I review all the work it needs since it's been sitting so long and throw out 6k. He replies that he's looking for more like 8500. I left it at that, thinking we may meet in the middle after I can hear it run, hopefully tomorrow or Monday.
What a day! I've been thinking about a 5speed, and can probably sell the red 89 for at least enough to cover the cost. I like having 2 928's but don't need or want 3.

Don, He found you, usually it's the other way around. Debate with current owner that it's time for TB, WP, etc. Counter at $ 7,500 & bring it home, then to the Spring Fling ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Nice, I would jump on it quick for $8500. I have to say that I would look at rear AC as a good thing to have. Point the vents forward and it feels great on the back of your arms and head.

I almost never use the rear air, and view it as unnecessary. I don't like the way my front AC temp gets warmer when I turn on the rear. The only time I have used it over the years is when I had heater valve issues and wasn't getting cold air from the front. Of course it also adds many more places for the Freon to leak out.

Looks exactly like the one I'm currently refreshing after 10 years in storage. Sounds like a good deal a $8500.

I'd run a carfax just in case.
Looks like someone's had the shifter boot up? Also, why was it parked?
At the least, I'd say it needs new tires and TBWP. Probably also intake refresh - If the paint is good, its easily worth 7500.. but it has the usual slew of costs ahead of it.

Carfax is always a good idea, so I'll do that just to confirm the story.
He mentioned that there was a bushing problem on the shifter so I assume that's why the boot is up.
The tires are like new, but unfortunately are 6-7 years old. Even have those new tire pointy things sticking out.
I still have the chrome wheels/tires from the 89 pic below, so I'll probably move the CIII wheels from the 89 to the 87 and reinstall the chrome wheels for resale.
Not sure about the timing belt yet. The owner thinks it was done by Hanns 7-8 years ago, but doesn't have a receipt showing it was done. I'm not big on the age limits for the belt, so if it looks good, might use it for a while, since I know the miles are low. I could probably visit Hanns and he might remember what he did. Oil pan gasket for sure, maybe motor mounts too. Hanns is awesome, he checked out my 86.5 at the dealership in the late 90's and was talking flex plate/thrust bearing issues, many years before anyone was talking about them online.
I have two intakes on the shelf and one set of valve covers, so should be easy to refresh the top end.
Of course fuel lines too...

I would not worry about the tires if they are 6 or 7 years old and do not show any dry cracks. I would not take them to 150mph but for normal speeds you will be fine.

Stick to $6000, he'll sell, just wait and see. After all, he came to you. I wouldn't worry about the age of the tires, it was stored indoors.
