I really miss talking with Greg, doing the mountain runs, SITM, and just generally bull****ting with him at his shop. Rest in Peace Buddy, you are missed. I would not let anyone else touch my 928. When I first met Greg, and joined RL, this is a quote from a private message, and what he told me about this forum.

Hard to read this and not be choked up.

Immortality is about how people remember you and how much you are missed.

Greg is as immortal as anyone could ever be.

I never met Greg, but he helped me many times. It was always kind and supportive advice. It's a shame such good guys don't get a little more time among us.

It was a running dialog that started back when I picked up a SAAB 9-5 at a dealer auction to replace my wife's ailing Audi a few years ago.
I put off buying her a winter car all year and it was late September when I finally headed to the auction to pick something (I love auctions, like a gambling addict is drawn to the tables....). He was giving me **** up to that point about what kind of POS I would probably buy.

I came home with a one owner SAAB 9-5 with 106k on the odo and a stack of records from the dealership. This car was pampered. She traded it in when the fuel pump dies. Very common to see cars with around 100k at the auction that just underwent some kind of repair that left the vehicle stranded, but wasn't a huge fix. Same story with the '03 Denali I picked up last fall.... 96k on the odo and the water pump was waving good-buy. An otherwise perfect two owner vehicle.... Anyway, back to the story.

Greg really liked SAAB's and was happy to hear I added one to the family. He was equally impressed when in the trunk of our 9-5 at SITM was 7 cases of Hacker-Pschorr and a spare ignition cassette.

As for the Volvo side..... I always gave him **** about loving SAAB's and hating Volvo's. That just didn't make sense to me, but he had his reasons.
I still love Volvo's, wherever Greg is now, I'm sure he still hates them

An ignition cassette (commonly known as the "DI cassette") is the replaceable ignition discharge module and the heart of Saab's Trionic fuel management system. It was first used on 1990 9000 models, and the early cassettes (which were red) were prone to spectacular and stinky meltdown that left the car inoperable. It became common practice for Saab owners to carry an extra DI cassette in their trunk, especially on long trips, despite the fairly high cost of the part. Other than the very early examples, the cassette can be swapped in about two minutes by anybody with a T-30 or 10 mm driver and a small flat screwdriver.

Starting with the 9-5 and 9-3 series in 1999, the cassettes were black instead of red, and unlike the red cassettes, rarely fail completely. It was a regular occurrence to see a 900 or 9000 towed in with a fried (red) DI cassette, but I have only seen a couple of later black cassette cars immobilized by cassette failure (and I've replaced many hundreds if not thousands of them). Typically the black cassettes just start throwing codes for incomplete combustion, but the car will run fine (CEL on). So...driving around with a spare DI in your trunk isn't really necessary any longer (but it doesn't hurt anything). A later black DI cassette can be used as a replacement in a car that originally had a red cassette, but a car that came new with a black cassette must always have a black cassette. They look identical other than the color, but the black cassette has additional capabilities that the red does not.

I have been helped by Greg and only briefly met him at SITM. He IS missed.

Hacker, in all my years I have NEVER seen an M7 bolt. NEVER. But Volvo felt the need to bolt on the thermostat housing with one. I am so glad I was able to get that bolt out. Who does that? M7? WTF?!?!?!?

Isnt M7 the size of the bolts that hold on the front disc guards on a S4 or is that M5?

I am talking about the thread size and not the size of the wrench. Just try to find a M7 bolt or nut. At least in North America you won't find one easily.

Heinrich, So good to hear from you!

To those above know only that each New Year brings more happiness and loss, as well as growing fond memories. In that all are missed, though I knew Greg best. Happy New year to all.

Greg always was a very helpful guy. He never talked down to anyone, and he knew enough to do so. He was a real good guy. I hope someone puts that on my tombstone.
Cheers, Greg,
Dave

I really miss my hillbilly buddy Greg. He'd call out of the blue, just to see if I was OK.
