Really sorry to hear about Greg's passing - I only met him briefly at SITM last summer but I always enjoyed ready his post's, he will be missed by the 928 community. My condolences and prayers to his family

Wow what a loss. I've been away from RL for a bit & truly sad to come back today & read of this. My condolences to Greg's family. Very sad indeed. Wish I could go on the 19th to the celebration of his life.

I didn't know him personally like the others but Greg has helped me with his extensive insight and 928 knowledge. I always appreciated his tips and advice. I will truly miss him. My prayers go out to his family.

I was heartbroken when Roger told me that Greg had passed.

There are many descriptions of Greg, but I think that all of us that knew Greg – could probably agree on one thing about him and that was that Greg was Real. He was a Real Guy. He was Real Funny. He was Real Honest. He was Real simple and straightforward. He was a Real Mechanic. He was a Real Friend. Greg was Real. What you see is what you get with Greg and there wasn’t no bones about it.

My heart goes out to his family and his close friends back at home. He was a one of a kind. I remember that whenever I answered the phone at work, he had a good line on the other end for me, and after a couple of volleys between us, we would end up laughing before getting down to business. He was a lot of fun to do business with and if I needed help, I know I could count on him.

He was one of the 928’ers that always was one of the first to offer help when Roger was out of town. I was grateful to have met him, known him and will always know that I was his Favorite Parts Girl. 

I am really sad that I will not be able to make the Celebration this weekend, as my own grandfather passed just a few days after Greg, and I must go to Waco to be with my mother for her birthday during this difficult time.

In Greg's Memory this year at Third Coast – I will be sure to Toast our good ole Friend with some good ole Tequilla Shots (and try to remember those clever sayings he had for those dang shots).

Obituary

Mr. Greg Nettles, 56, a Clayton County, Georgia, resident, died Dec. 25, 2012, at Southern Regional Medical Center after days of extensive medical treatment. Greg was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 9, 1956.

Greg is survived by his mother, Orma Woods Maddox and her husband, Wilbur; his sister, Stacy Nettles; his only son, Troy Nettles and his wife, Kim, and their son, Jayden, Greg’s only grandson; as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Wyman Nettles of Paragould, Arkansas.

He received an Associate’s Degree of Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology from Southern Arkansas University Tech (Southwest Technical Institute).

Greg worked for several years at the Valvoline plant in College Park, Georgia. He later operated his own shop, Greg’s Garage, in Sharpsburg, Georgia. He specialized in exotic cars, racing motors, and had a special interest in the Porsche 928.

A memorial service is scheduled on Jan. 19, 2013, for 2 p.m. at Atlanta Regional Airport, 7 Falcon Drive, Peachtree City, GA 30269.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

I talked to Greg many times about 928s that I was looking at. (I still havent bought one.) I've been by his shop a few times in the 911 when I was in the area just to chat because he was such a nice guy, and he has helped me a couple of times when I was working on something and got myself in trouble. I know what a part of the 928 community he was, and I khow WHY. RIP Greg. You were one helluva guy.

I had not noticed this thread until today, but I am quite saddened to hear of Greg's passing. Though we never met in person, we had spoken online and he was always one to lend a helping hand. He was one of the first to reach out to me when I joined RL.

Rest in Peace Greg.

I'm sorry to say that I have just found this (I was gone for several weeks over Christmas). I only knew Greg through this forum and we never talked about Porsches. We talked about DOGS! Our mutual love of dogs. I found that he had a heart the size of Texas when it came to 'Man's Best Friend.' RIP Greg, God must have needed more angels to meet those crossing the Rainbow Bridge.

It's been a little over 2 months since we collectively learned of Greg's passing... and I know we will all individually keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Greg was a true 928 proponent and enthusiast... a teacher and mentor... our friend.

It is still hard to fathom we will be sharing stories, beers & 928 comraderie without him in a few months. SITM won't be the same without him.

Made two trips to Banner Elk (Host Town for SITM) over the Winter for kids to snowboard on Sugar and Beech Mountain. Very sharp contrast to the Spring/Summer memories my kids and I made @ SITM in the years past.

Not sure if I can make it this year but hope plenty of folks do to further commemorate a good person (and a pretty knowledgable 928 guy!)

Greg was on my mind while in Banner Elk over the winter, for sure.
