Merry Christmas AO. Looks like she will be back on the road in no time. It is a beauty for sure.

Have you thought of a water/meth system for the engine. I would want to keep an eye on those ACT's.

I think it is awesome that you have your son involved in your rebuild. I am sure he will be excited to drive it when you have finished!

I haven't bought myself another 928 but there will be another! I have been playing with a Super Coupe 5spd for now. I rebuilt a forged motor, upgraded the blower and IC, moetes quarterhorse etc and she pulls hard. A good 1.5 sec faster than my OB in the quarter mile. Looking to add a remote oil less comp turbo this spring to compound boost her. Should be interesting to see how it all comes together.

Here is a pic

I will continue to follow your thread. Its fun to see it all come together. Maybe one day we can go out for a fun drive!

Finally some progress to report.

Yesterday I spent the day pulling off the headers. I thought the Devek LII headers were a PITA, well I can now say that the MSDS headers aren't much better. In fact, I might go so far as to say they are worse because you cannot drop the clutch with the MSDS headers installed (but you can with the D LII's). Some of those bolts are a royal MFer to get at. Not the worst, but pretty darn close.

I also dropped the "sewer pipe" exhaust. It had some kind of insert that went into the headers that prevented me from dropping the headers by themselves.

Now, as long as I'm not too hung over tomorrow, I should be able to drop the clutch, AC, alternator, and yank the hood off. Then it's just the little stuff and I can pull the motor this weekend.

The best part was that the boy jumped right in when I invited him to start pulling the headers!

It's OUT! Finally!

I'm only 2 months behind, but at least it's out... No drama. Came out without any trouble. My neighbor, Anton, and his buddy, Rob, came over Saturday morning and we yanked it out. It took all of 10 minutes to do the actual pulling. I've already pulled both heads and they look good. Need to inspect the valves, seats, and guides. Never done that before, so I really don't know what I'm getting myself into, but I'm sure it's not too difficult. Cams look perfect. Supercharger looks perfect too. Cylinder 7 is toast. Now it's just a matter of cleanup, measure & replace, then reassemble. That's all.

Good team work AO !! What do you think caused that damage to the cylinder ?

I'm pretty sure it was a result of too much boost and advanced timing. Basically, knock. The pistons look like they have been chewing on nuts. There was a picture DR posted sometime back where the spark plugs had a lot of aluminum deposits on them, which is a telltale sign of this condition - never seen it before in person until now.

I hope to have the pistons out soon and we can see if the rings are broken or not - which was the original diagnosis from DR or some other mech the PO had look at it.

Given the condition of the piston, the top compression ring land is likely pretty squished holding the ring off the cylinder wall......

looks as if detonation caused a small part of the piston to "chip" off??? Looks as if there is a small piece missing right in line of the damage to the cylinder wall.

My bet is that a chunk of the ring land is loose, right where the mark is.

I strongly recommend you install a knock sensor and use a J&S Vampire knock control system !

Yes... You've said that a couple times now, and that is my intention. The dead motor had a knock sensor installed, but it wasn't hooked up to anything. So I will install it on the new motor and start budgeting for a vampire system.

Oops, sorry about that.... there is a s/c S2 being built here in the UK, which will use one... should be running about the same time as yours.

You also need to get the EZ-F modifed with a 2 bar map sensor.

A little update. I got the heads disassembled and pretty much everything looks good. The valves "felt" sloppy to my untrained hand, but measured well within spec, so the guides are good to go for another round.

I lapped the valves, but found one (#7) was slightly bent and would not fully seat. The replacement should be here today. Then I have my neighbor wash the heads in his super cool parts washer (aluminum safe) at his shop. This will get the last of the grime, grease, and any lapping compound left behind off. Then it'll be time to work on the block.

We're working on another grant at work, so progress will be slow until April 5.

Pics...

Wow... I am slackin'

I made a lot of progress over the weekend. I got the heads and cams back on and the oil pan. I refreshed the oil pump o-ring. Water pump is ready to go on, but I need to get some new bolts. I'm going to go for a porkensioner on this one. Also waiting on my re-coated cam gears (need to call the guy today to find out status).

My biggest hang up is what to do about the oil filler plate. I need to make a baffle and don't have a tig welding setup to do it. I think I need to get a provent too - although there was an oil/air separator int he car, but I'm not familiar with it at all.

It's going to be a tall order to get things together in time for SITM, but I will try. I will also need to make a new eprom for the LH/EZF so I can drive it safely down to SITM (that can take a long time to get right).

The good news is the GT seems to be running quite well (and fast!). Did not try the AC, so I probably need to do that before too long in case I need to use the GT as the backup.

New rings and bearings installed.

Heads and cams installed.

Oil pan studs installed.

oil pan ready to go on...

I though I had a picture with the oil pan on, but must have forgotten to take a pic.

Looking good AO!

May be a good time to go with the early style oil pickup (and pan spacer, maybe)

Regarding the baffle, you could go with the simple on 928 Intl sells (Doc Brown design?), or Kuhn's separator. Do you need a custom blockoff plate, or are you working with stock components?
